Does Liefeld do his own backgrounds? I notice a tendency in his art where characters are just jumping in an empty void, standing in a sparsely-decorated, featureless room with bad geometry, or backed by a bunch of wrinkly, squinting faces. A lot of his covers are just one character on a single-color background running towards the viewer. Is this also him or does he at this point have someone who should handle that?
he doesn’t tend to share pencil credits with people so yea it’s him (I have heard of artists pawning off backgrounds on interns/inkers but I haven’t heard anything about Liefeld)
I remember a quote from ages ago from him basically saying he didn’t like doing backgrounds because he thought they where repetitive, again kinda a baffling thing he was allowed to get away with but he was also notorious for blowing past deadlines so it may have been a case of the editors not wanting to kick it back to him to finish the backgrounds and have to wait another unknown amount of time so they just printed it
I wanted to try and find like examples but it would just basically be a wall of pictures because it’s basically anything he ever drew, once you start noticing it it’s hard to unsee, pick up any Liefeld comic and see how many backgrounds are extremely simple if not just flat out color gradients
