There's an interesting divide between people who think inflicting suffering makes people better at producing value, or whether the infliction or suffering in much of society is actually an imperfection which doesn't contribute to productivity. I will not claim that it's either way decisively, but it is an interesting implicit difference which often has people talking past each other. I'm not even sure if anecdotally my own penchant for suffering for the sake of my values / desire for quality in my own work- is causally linked or even correlated with better results. I sort of try to make myself act more like it doesn't, cause that definitely does correlate with an increase in my QoL, and taking a QoL hit for inconclusive gains doesn't seem like the best deal.
