love him! it's always really fascinating to hear the "pre-reform" works, too (especially because you get to hear how much stuff he proceeded to reuse later on), but Iphigénie en Tauride is just my golden ideal – a relatively simple storyline, just unrelenting intensity, and very musically and emotionally gripping material. the opening scene builds on such a simple idea to such incredible effect, and the Iphigénie/Oreste/Pylade trio (merging onto the Oreste/Pylade duo) is like, top 20 opera scenes of all time to me. (Gardiner and Pearlman are my audio and Christie and Minkowski are my video of choice.)
