Haunted’s Song of the Day 103 - The Oaf (My Luck is Wasted) by Big Wreck
Side Note: Happy 20th anniversary of In Loving Memory Of...

Big Wreck - The Oaf
Month: May
Ohhh, this song. I hated it the first time I heard it. I don't even know why. There was something about it that I just didn't think sound like. And it made me even more mad because I thought that the guitar riff was fucking awesome. So I continued to listen, and now I think the whole song is just amazing. But that guitar riff though... One of the best I've ever heard.
Gonna fire up someday My luck is wasted I'm on the run somewhere Feel my hand wrapped around My luck is wasted I'm on the run somewhere
Down here under the lighthouse. Upstairs you see for miles. Keep my name under the white out. Let me miss you all the while.
...No you would've left me anyways. Well, I'll just bow my head. I swear you might've left me anyways, so I'll leave you instead.
"Under the Lighthouse" - Big Wreck
I love this album, In Loving Memory Of..., and this song has always been one of the stand out songs for me on it. Granted I love the whole album. I always feel like the songs do a good job of reflecting the motions of a break up, from the initial anger and adjustment, through the gradual sadness, and to that strange point of settling and acceptance. The lead singer (a Canadian, so I have to boast about it) was quoted saying that "The majority of the album is actually written about one girl. Somebody who's still fucking me up."
Maybe it's cause I just love angsty 90's shit, or because I grew up with this album and it reminds me of going skiing with my dad while he snowboarded, or because I feel like every song on that album reminds of someone or some moment in the past, but good Lord whenever one of these songs come up, I get this deep emotional reaction. I want to get up and jump around and dance, or I want to go for a long contemplative drive or walk.
God damn I just really fucking love this album and I needed to talk about it. Fuck.
Big Wreck satisfied with big new album.

I write about random things a lot. I write a lot about random things. I'm sure you know by now that Davy Jones, the iconic member of The Monkees and beloved British entertainer, passed away recently. Though it was the band that propelled him into stardom, he had already made appearances on a number of TV series, including Coronation Street in its second season.
What you may not know is that The Monkees had a lot of influence in the pop and rock music in their era; Jimi Hendrix' first American tour was opening for the famed group in the summer of 1967, and Jones himself is the reason another young musician by the same name would eventually choose the moniker 'Bowie' for his own career.
Thirty years after The Monkees came to the United States, another young group of musicians released their debut album, a brilliant display of musicianship and composition; although they may not appear to have much in common with the famed pop group, timing could not have been better when Big Wreck entered the scene with the release of their debut album, In Loving Memory Of...
In Loving Memory Of... (1997) - Buy
Last song of the day. Then I have to take a shower. But what a coincidence this is: This album was released on my birthday, and, Vitalogy by Pearl Jam, from the previous post, was released on my girlfriend's birthday. Huh. It's just one of those weird incidents you experience during the day that are interesting enough to pique your interest at that exact particular moment, but never interesting enough to mention to someone 5 minutes later. But since I noticed it this second... I'm telling you now. Yup... ... Big Gulps huh? WELP, see ya later!
