Chapter 2: The Reception
K a c e y:
As I looked around the ballroom that was now decorated for a wedding reception and Larry and Laurent's birthday surprise, I couldn't help but admire all the love I saw in this room. My mother and Larry's mother were talking and bonding as if they've been best friends for decades. My brother was behaving and getting to know the Bourgeois family a little better. Beyonce and Jay were mingling around the room without security, letting people admire and coo over Blue Ivy. Speaking of Beyonce, I'm so grateful for everything she's done. She helped Larry with so much, everything from the wedding to the reception without me knowing until last month some time. She was able to help me plan his birthday surprise as well too. She went all out and had Ms. Tina make my dress and the dressed I'd be switching into periodically throughout the night. I felt like this was turning out to be something like the quinceanara I never had but I'm grateful, nonetheless. I'm glad she and Larry took care of everything because if it was up to me, it definitely wouldn't hae turned out this nice. I'm surprised she's staying though. With the some of my select friends bothering her or Blue every five minutes, I'd totally understand if she left. She wasn't having it though and actually took the mic from the Dj at one point to tell everyone it was my day and to pretend she and Jay weren't here if they have to. It actually worked, which meant I had to mingle with everyone even though I really just want to change into a more comfortable dress and eat. This dress is so tight, of course I gained a few pounds by the time Ms. Tina took my measurement. These shoes are making my back hurt so I took them off and put them some where I could find them later. I just put a smile on my face and circled around the room, trying to ignore the discomfort I was in.
"You think they'll perform?" someone asked as I walked back to my table with Tasha. I turned around to see Brent infront of me. His dreads were neatly retwisted in a ponytail down his back while he was dressed in a simple peacoat with khaki pants. There's no doubt that Brent is good looking but his attitude makes him unattractive, which is why I'm with Larry and not him.
"Depends on who you're talking about...the Criminalz Crew or Beyonce and Jay," I said as I looked over at Larry and Laurent who were mingling with their friends. I could tell how much they all missed each other and figured I'd let them have this time to themselves without barging in on it.
"I'm down to see both performances. Looks like you went to New York and found yourself a whole Hollywood posse."
"Look, what do you want Brent?"
"I just came to see you. I haven't laid eyes on you since your graduation party."
"I've been home since July, you probably knew that too. Don't play stupid."
"I did know. I also knew you were living with him. I stopped by your mom's house and she told me. What do I look like showing up on the doorstep of that man's house?"
"Well, that obviously didn't stop you from showing up to my reception, did it? What are you really here for Brent?"
"To congratulate you ma. To congratulate you on everything from the marriage, the baby, right on down to the pregnancy magazines I've seen your face all over in the stores. Congratulations on everything babe," he said as he hugged me. I kept my hands at my side instead of hugging him back. He finally caught the hint and let me go.
"I have a feeling you came for something else but, thanks," I said.
"Kacey, who this?" Larry said as he threw his arm around my shoulder, pulling me closer to him.
"Nobody, I'm nobody man. Just cam to congratulate y'all. I'll be on my way homie, you don't have to get your fancy security to escort me out," he said as he referred to the security outside. They were simply there to make sure nothing happened to Beyone and Jay Z but she told them to do as they please because she didn't need them, they weren't there to keep people out of my "fancy" reception. Brent then kissed my forehead as he winked at Larry before turning on his heels, walking to the door. Larry just rolled his eyes, I'm glad he didn't make a big deal out of it. I'm not convinced about Brent's reasons for being here though. Brent's a snake, I know he's up to something but today isn't the day to worry about it.
"Wow. Come babe, my crew want to see you," Larry said as he walked me over to the circle his friends were in. He started to introduce me to all of them even though I knew their names already. By obsessing over "Les Twins" for two years, it was only natural to do the same over the people that were close to them.
"She's prettier in person Larry! Hi Kacey, congratulations!" Laura said as she hugged me, then rubbed my baby bump. After today, I'll be use to it...I'm sure.
"Welcome to our Criminalz family Kacey. You dance too, or no?" Regi asked me.
"Yeah, I dance but don't think I'm good enough to be in the crew," I told him.
"Is okay, we teach you sister," Speedy said as he hugged me.
"After you have this, of course," Waydi said as he pointed to my belly. Deyvron smacked Waydi's hand away then pulled Rochka to his side
"He loose voice in concert but he happy he meet you now, me too," Rochka said as they both hugged me with a smile.
"No forget me, I Shaun!" he said as he and Laurent ran towards me. I just hugged him too as he caught his breath.
"Come, sister and brother meet you too," Laurent said as he dragged me and Larry to where their family sat. As much as I'd like to say I know who each of these people are, I don't. Larry and Laurent don't really talk much about the individual members of their family. After Larry and Laurent introduced me to them, they all engulfed me into a huge group hug..as if it was their way of welcoming me into the family.
"Pardon me, it's time for the father and daughter dance Kacey, Abuelo is waiting for you," my grandmother said as she took my hand. Larry kissed my forehead and nodded for me to go ahead. My grandmother led me to the middle of the floor where my grandfather was waiting. This wasn't the first time my grandfather and I danced together for a special occasion. For the father and daughter dance at my quinceanara, he was who I danced with. Ever since my father passed away, my grandfather has stepped in his place and helped fill the hole.
"I'm so proud of you baby," he said as the music began to play and he twirled me around on the empty dance floor.
"Are you really, Abuelo?" I asked him as I lay my head on his shoulder.
"Of course I am. In my day, in Puerto Rico, you'd be be worshiped for being such a strong, Latina woman at this age. I still feel the same even though we aren't in Puerto Rico, you are strong my child."
"I hope you're right Abuelo. I don't know if I can do it though. I'll have to be a mom and a wife while I'm trying to establish my career. How am I supposed to be devoted to my family and work at the same time?"
"Oh my Princess, you'll figure it out. Just walk in faith of God and he'll help you through it. I know you can do this. You come from a strong line of Latina women, you were made for this kind of stuff," he said as he smiled at me. The music began to die down as we stopped spinning around on the dance floor.
"I love you grandpa," I said as I kissed his cheek.
"I love you more my child." After the song finally stopped, Larry came and tapped my grandfather on his shoulder.
"You take care of my Princess now Larry," my grandpa said as he placed my hand into Larry's again. It was time for us to have our first dance.
"Of course, she my queen Mr. Holana," he said as he shook my grandfather's hand.
"I can see that. Oh, and Happy Birthday." My grandfather walked back to his seat and the music began to play again.
"I have never been so much in love before
What a difference a true love made in my life
So nice, so right
Loving you gave me somethin' new
That I've never felt, never dreamed of
Somethings changed
No, it's not the feeling I had before
Oh, it's much, much more"
I remembered Larry asking me two months ago what song I'd want to dance to at my wedding. I didn't pay it much attention as I told him Love Ballad by LTD. It impressed me how he remembered and went through all the trouble to get someone to find it, songs by LTD are hard to find these days for some reason.
"How you know old song like this?" he asked as he spun me around.
"This is the same song my mother and father would get up and dance to every Friday night."
"Where your dad now, you no talk about him much?" I've avoided this subject with anyone that's ever asked because it was too painful to talk about. Larry isn't just anyone though, he's my husband so I might as well suck it up and tell him.
"My dad was murdered trying to save my brother one day. Antonio had gotten caught up with the wrong crowd when we lived in Puerto Rico and my father knew it would end badly that day. I think I was 7 when he came in my room and told me he loved me and gave me that ring I always wear before he left. At the age of 7, I knew he wasn't coming back. I use to silently blame Antonio for it just as much as he blamed himself. It's still pretty hard to talk about, that's why I never mention it." As I finished, Larry just wiped away my tears. He then began to sing along to the lyrics as best as he could and it made me smile. He was off beat a little and the lyrics weren't accurate but his voice sounded smooth and I literally melted a little.
"Well Mr. Bourgeois, how do you know this song?" I asked him.
"Everybody know this song. Is good song, my mom love this. Me and Lau dance with her when she play it all of time too."
"Is that so? I guess that's why our moms bonded so quicly, they have a lot in common. You don't talk much about your dad either you know."
"I tell you before...he leave the family. Is nothing more to say. I never do this to you Kacey, understand?" he said as he looked me in my eye.
"Yes, I understand Larry."
"Good," he said as he continued to sing the last little bit of the song.
"They're not there when you love me,
hold me and say you care.
And what we have is much more than they could see."
Chapter 1: Mr. and Mrs.
4 months later, December 6, 2012
K a c e y:
I don't know the person that stares back at me in this mirror. All this makeup has camouflaged me into someone I don't quite recognize. My curls are long gone and pulled up into a bun on the top of my head. I turn to the side and see my perfect figure is long gone as well. Just three more months and I'll have it back, hopefully. Kacey Lena Holana, the eighteen year old high school graduate, future college student and medical school student, isn't who I see in this mirror. Instead I see, Kacey Lena Holana, future wife and mother at the very tender age of eighteen.
"Cold feet? I never understand this saying but seem like good time I say it," I turned around and saw Laurent standing before me. He looked handsome in his tuxedo while his twists fell into his face, missing the snapback that usually covers them.
"Cold feet? Nah, what would make you say that?" I asked as I quickly wiped away the tear that threatened to ruin my makeup.
"I not sure. Maybe, is because we start already and you back here still," he said as he stepped closer to me.
"I don't think I can do this Lau. I knew this day would come, just not this fast. I thought he'd maybe wait at least a year."
"Larry wait for nobody, he want something he make it his. I think I tell you this before."
"You probably did and I probably didn't believe you."
"Is oki but tell me Kacey, is what you want?"
"Yes....I think so.....I'm not sure." I completely broke down and no longer cared about my makeup. Laurent simply stepped forward and held me in his arms.
"I think is what you want. When you look at Larry, say it all. Now, Larry crazy out there, he think you no love him. You love him, right?"
"Of course I love him Lau, I--"
"Shh, then this is good. You only thing Larry want for his birthday. Is why he choose today for this."
"Lau, I'm so sorry. I forget you guys are twins some times. Happy Birthday!"
"Merci, belle. My present is you and Larry happy...together. So, dry the eyes and make my twin happy." I just shook my head as I let him go. He's right, if I didn't love Larry then this moment wouldn't even exist.
"I see you out there, sister," Lau said as he pecked my forehead before leaving. I got myself together as I looked in the mirror, fixing my makeup and putting on my jewelry. Kacey Lena Holana, the future wife and mother became a little easier to recognize as she stared back at me in the mirror this time.
..............................
"She was lost in so many different ways
Out in the darkness with no guide
I know the cost, of a losing hand
Ever for the grace of God, go I
I found heaven on earth
You are my last, my first...."
As I appeared from behind the curtain, so did my grandfather from the opposite side of the room. He then hooked his arm onto mine as we met up in the center of the aisle. Ever since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of my father doing this but that dream was snatched from me the same time my father's life was snatched from him. I look at my grandfather and see that my father is walking with us in him, they've never looked so much alike until this very moment. As we continued walking, I looked over to the direction the music came from and saw Beyonce singing. She made a heart with her hands in my direction before the chorus of the song came back in.
"Mi amor, you look beautiful," my grandfather whispered as we walked behind Camille. Every now and then she'd look back and smile after she dropped a handful of flowers on the floor.
"Gracias abuelo, te amo," I said as I kissed his cheek. I hadn't noticed the music finally stopped as my grandfather placed my hand into Larry's. It was the first time I've seen his face in two days. That spark I felt when I first laid eyes on him took place all over again. He looked amazing his tux, his twists accenting his face. His eyes and nose were a hint of red, as if he'd been crying just as much as I have but, he still managed to smile. That smile that displayed his bunny teeth and wrinkled nose is what assured me I'm doing the right thing. The pastor of the church began to speak but I couldn't bring myself to focus in on his words. It wasn't until Larry turned around to get a piece of paper from Lau that I decided I'd better pay attention.
"Larry, you may go ahead and read what you have prepared," pastor Brown said. Larry looked out in the crowd and it was the first time I noticed who was here. All of my family and friends, including the Carter family. I saw a bunch of Criminalz Crew members as well, some of them were fresh off of a plane from Paris. All of Larry's siblings sat together in a pew behind his mother who sat beside my mother. I couldn't help but notice them both wipe away tears from their face as they smiled at me.
"Oki everybody, my English not perfect so sorry but Kacey, I know you afraid," he said as he balled up the piece of paper and continued. "I afraid too but I know this work. Love...love is what this work on. I promise I love you on matter what. If the things go bad....I still love you. I thank you 'cus you take chance with me, you risk things for me. Is why I use my birthday for this day, you my best gift. I want nobody but you Kacey, Je T'aime belle," he said as he wiped away the tears that pooled under my eyes.
"Thank you Larry, that was beautiful. Kacey, you may read what you have prepared now," the pastor said. Tasha motioned to pass me the paper I wrote for today, I signaled for her to keep it. I want to say whatever comes to mind.
"I never though I'd see this day in a million years. I remember being in my room, praying to God for the simple opportunity of just meeting you. He blessed me with so much more. And you're right, I am afraid...afraid that I might not be the perfect wife but I promise I'll do my best to come as close to perfect as I can get. Happy Birthday Larry, Te amo."
"I guess that about sums it up, that was beautiful Kacey. The rings please," pastor Brown said as Camille came forward with a small pillow, the rings nestled on top. Larry took a ring and slid it on my finger first. I then smiled at Camille and picked up the other ring and slid it on Larry's finger.
"Larry, do you take Kacey to be your lawful wedded wife, to cherish and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, til death do you part?"
"Yes, of course," Larry blurt out and the whole room burst into laughter.
"Is I do Larry, we go over this...remember?" Laurent tried whispering to his twin.
"Oh, yes..sorry. I do," he said with a smile.
"And do you Kacey, take Larry to be your lawful wedded husband, to cherish and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, til death do you part?"
"I do."
"If there are any objections to this marriage as of now, please come forward," everyone turned their heads to search the room but no one came forward.
"Very well, then by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Larry, you may kiss your bride."
Larry pulled me closer to him and just looked me in the eye. He then traced the outline of my chin with his finger before he kissed me. He kissed me with so much force, as if this ceremony wasn't the only way we needed to seal this promise we just made to each other. The only thing that seemed to stop Larry from kissing me was the rice the bridesmaids and grooms began to throw. He turned around to pick up Camille, held my hand, and ran out of the Church as the crowd began to throw the rice they were provided as well. They followed us all the way outside to our limo. My mother stopped me to kiss and hug me goodbye, as if she wasn't getting in the limo behind us to to follow us to the reception. I tried kissing and hugging as many people as I could before the limo driver finally motioned me inside.
"Well Mrs. Bourgeois, was wedding you dream of?" Larry asked as we pulled away form the church.
"It was better than any wedding I've ever dreamed of Mr Bourgeois, Thank you."
"No, Merci," he said as he kissed me.
"Ew, get a room," Camille said. Larry and I just laughed as we tickled her. In the process, my wedding band caught my attention. I slid the ring off and noticed a heart was engraved in it. I then looked down at my hand and noticed the same heart was already etched on my ring finger.
