Patriots Pummel Colts to Reach the Super Bowl

The New England Patriots defeat the Indianapolis Colts, 45-7, to win the AFC Championship and reach the franchise’s eighth Super Bowl. After losing the last two championship games (fourth consecutive appearance), Tom Brady and Bill Belichick will appear in their sixth Super Bowl as coach and QB tandem.

This game was hardly in doubt as the closest margin was 14-7 right before the ‘Pats’ added a field goal to make the score 17-7 at halftime. LeGarrette Blount asserted himself with a punishing run game that gave him 148 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown. Brady was efficient going 23 for 35 with 226 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Indy’s offense took the pick by D’Qwell Jackson, drove down the field and scored their only points on a Zurlon Tipton one-yard TD run. An “odd” play happened in the third quarter when Brady threw a 16-yard TD to his tackle Nate Solder. Pat Develin and Rob Gronkowski caught the other two touchdowns from Brady and Julian Edelman caught nine passes for 98 yards to aid the Patriots cause.

Andrew Luck’s struggles continued against Belichick’s defense as Luck was 12 for 33 passing for 126 yards and two INTs (to Darrelle Revis and Jamie Collins). Dropped passes hindered Indianapolis’ chances early in the game before New England jumped on them. The Colts progressed one step further this season and they head into the offseason looking for answers on how to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2009 season.

With their 20th postseason win together, Brady and Belichick and the AFC’s top seeded Patriots head to Glendale, Arizona to face the NFC’s top seeded Seahawks on February 1. The game will kickoff shortly before 6:30 PM Eastern on NBC.
