Milky Way & Zodiacal Light at Nambling Lakes - Dowerin, Western Australia
Nikon d5500 35mm ISO 4000 f/2.8 Foreground: 18 x 20 seconds Sky: 46 x 30 seconds iOptron SkyTracker This is a 64 shot panorama of the Milky Way and post-sunset Zodiacal Light above Nambling Lakes, 5km west of the small Wheatbelt town of Dowerin in Western Australia, 2 hours north east of the state capital, Perth. I specifically wanted to capture the Zodiacal Light with this panorama, having seen it very prominently the last time I was in Dowerin a few weeks earlier. That time I was in the middle of shooting a panorama facing south so by the time I'd finished it was too faint to capture. The Zodiacal Light is best seen after sunset in Spring and before dawn in Autumn. It's currently Spring here in Australia so this was started about an hour after sunset and finished about an hour later. It was an abrupt finish actually as a local police officer came to check on my car, which was parked on the side of a main road nearby...thankfully I only had to rush through the last couple of shots before packing up my gear to explain myself to the officer :) The light pollution on the left is from the town of Goomalling just 15km to the west. Also prominent on the left horizon is the Carina Nebula while the North America Nebula can be seen just above the eastern horizon on the right of the image. The dead tree was light painted with a hand held spotlight.

Milky Way at Yenyening Lakes, Western Australia
Nikon d5500 50mm + Hoya Red Intensifier filter ISO 3200 f/2.8 Foreground: 26 x 13 seconds Sky: 77 x 30 seconds iOptron SkyTracker This is a 103 shot panorama of the Milky Way setting over a dry lake bed at Yenyening Lakes near Beverley, about two hours east of Perth in Western Australia. This is a late season panorama with the core low on the western horizon. In this part of the world the galactic band is viewed almost horizonally aligned with the horizon as sets to the west. There is always quite a bit of controlled burning going on at this time of year, before the summer sets in, so the air in parts is quite thick with smoke which scatters the light giving it a yellow/orange glow as you can see here. Two prominent magenta/red coloured nebulae can be seen also just above the horizon, Carina on the far left and the North America Nebula on the right.

Milky Way at Yenyening Lakes - Beverley, Western Australia
Nikon d5500 50mm + Hoya Red Intensifier filter ISO 5000 f/3.2 16 x 30 seconds iOptron SkyTracker This is a 16 shot panorama of the Milky Way rising over Yenyening Lakes about 2 hours east of Perth in Western Australia. The lake was very still this particular night so the stars were nicely reflecting off the surface.

Milky Way at Yenyening Lakes - Beverley, Western Australia
Nikon d5500 35mm ISO 5000 f/2.8 Sky: 19 x 30 seconds Foreground: 15 x 8 seconds iOptron SkyTracker This is a 34 image panorama of the Milky Way rising over Yenyening Lakes near Beverley about 2 hours east of Perth in Western Australia. Yenyening Lakes are a system of lakes in the heart of the State's Wheatbelt district and are the source for the Avon and Swan Rivers. Jupiter can be seen here as the brightest 'star' very near the core while the bright star Altair, part of the three star system known as the Familiy of Aquila, is just above the horizon.

Milky Way over Yenyening Lakes - Beverley, Western Australia
Nikon d5500 35mm ISO 5000 f/2.8 Sky: 51 x 30s Foreground: 24 x 10s iOptron SkyTracker This is a 75 image panorama of the Milky Way over a dry salt lake bed at Yenyening Lakes near Beverley in Western Australia. This was the last image I took this particular night as a bank of cloud moved into the area, which you can see quite clearly here. Very prominant green and orange airglow can be seen as well, along with the Magellanic Clouds just to the right of centre, near the horizon. The jigsaw-like patterns on the lake bed are pressure ridges which form when salt rises to the surface and starts crystalising. The lake continues to evaporate and as it dries it contracts and causes the salt to create pressure ridges

Milky Way over The Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia
Nikon d5500 35mm 18 x 30 seconds ISO 4000 f/2.2 iOptron SkyTracker This composition is very similar to one I shot on an earlier trip to this location. I didn't know it at the time but after stitching them I began to think 'this looks very familiar!'. The other one had the LMC so they're not identical but it is the exact same location.....which is kind of a coincidence since The Pinnacles cover such a large area :) Anyway, this is a small panorama of just 18 images shot as the Milky Way was setting towards the west. You can see the Indian Ocean in the bottom right corner of the image. The foreground was illuminated using a hand held spotlight.
