Alright, it’s my turn.

Enter Ingolf, a vampire whose gift is ambiguously referred to as a “truth aura”. In essence, what he does is make those near him speak the truth, they can’t tell lies.

Stefan and Vladimir, two shameless scoundrels who don’t mind divulging the horrible details of all the maidens they’ve carted off with, think this Ingolf guy is great, and so, when they hear that there’s an uprising against the Volturi big trial happening in North America, they decide to bring Ingolf. He can expose that slimy Aro.

This is gonna be great.

Here are your actors, and as these three arrive to Forks much as Stefan and Vladimir did in canon, here is your stage.

And I finally get to this post, months later.

Oh boy.

Ingolf Arrives as a Witness

At first, Edward is overjoyed. This, here, is a man who even more than Maggie can prove the Volturi are lying despot scum. Maggie can just shout "TRUTH, LIES" where Ingolf will make the Volturi confess to their underhanded ways and that this is not about Renesmee at all.

Ingolf will be their key to proving to the Volturi witnesses just who they really are and that the Cullens themselves are perfectly innocent (as they'll easily confess Renesmee's not an immortal child and is Bella and Edward's miracle daughter).

This is great!

For two seconds.

Then Edward finds himself confessing in front of Carlisle the time he nearly murdered all of the Biology classroom to eat Bella. He also confesses that his first plan in Volterra was to massacre the city square to draw Volturi attention and murder him.

He's struck dumb with horror. That... Why did he say that? Yes, it's true, but... He never wanted Carlisle to know that.

Ingolf, who has been in this situation before, awkwardly explains that that's how the gift works. It tends to bring out the things you want to acknowledge the least. There's a distance limitation and he can go hide in the woods but...

Edward tells him it's fine. Well, he tries to. Then he blurts it's not fine at all because there's things he doesn't want his family knowing.

NO, IT'S ACTUALLY FINE BECAUSE THE TRUTH IS GREAT!

Edward stand there contradicting himself for ten minutes. Then he leaves to go breathe in a paper bag while asking if Carlisle won't please talk to him later, WITHOUT INGOLF, and Edward can explain everything.

The rest of the family's still there, Bella awkwardly confesses that she knew all of this it just... didn't sound so bad... when he said it the first time.

Bella's glad for her weird brain as it appears to be preventing her from blurting the truth about everything (such that she's secretly glad Jacob imprinted on Renesmee because now he won't leave her life).

However, the peace lasts for all of two seconds as Carlisle, now thinking of the elephant in the room, confesses to having been very close to Aro. Very close. And that he's still hurt, confused, and surprised that any of this is happening and is gathering witnesses because for as shady as Aro is acting, for as much as he thinks he needs witnesses, this is not an army nor an uprising.

Carlisle stares in blank horror at Esme, who is right there. Esme doesn't seem to comprehend, the others, of course, all do.

Emmett asks who was on top.

Carlisle sprints away from Ingolf as fast as he can. Emmett, like much of the internet regarding any male/male pairing, is haunted by his own question.

The rest all stare at each other, waiting for some terrible, dark, secret to come out.

However, all of Esme's dark secrets are from her human life, Rosalie has none, and Emmett is Emmett.

They awkwardly welcome Ingolf, he'll be very useful.

It Gets Worse

Carlisle eventually confronts Ingolf and apologizes and gets into the whole sordid history of his time in Volterra and how, yes, he can be trusted and isn't a spy he just--has very complicated feelings about all of this. But he is fully committed, no need to worry.

Siobhan just kind of stares at Carlisle and thinks it's the most Carlisle thing he's ever said in his life.

Edward would be horrified but every time he tries to enter the house something worse comes out of his mouth. He's now sitting in the woods, being comforted by Bella, telling himself that it's alright and he doesn't have any dark secrets.

He just has to be at peace with himself, clearly, and then he won't blurt out anything and THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH ANYTHING HE'S EVER DONE.

Edward, with Bella's encouragement, resolves himself to confront Ingolf much as he once confronted the human Bella who smelled delicious and ruined his life.

Unfortunately, that makes him think of human Bella and he ends up immediately confessing to watching Bella sleep unawares from inside her room, crushing spiders on her bed, and fantasizing about her scent.

FUCK.

Edward returns to the woods to cry.

Edward and Carlisle Talk

Carlisle decides he has to confront Edward.

Esme's getting anxious and neurotic over how miserable they are and the Volturi are very nearly on their doorstep. Edward has to pull himself together before that point.

Carlisle says that blood lust makes them all do crazy things and that the important thing is that Edward didn't murder Biology or Saint Marcus' Square or... rape Bella in her sleep. Now, does Carlisle approve? No. And frankly, he's a little disturbed, but Edward clearly knows all of this is wrong or he wouldn't have hid it and he never acted on most of these actions.

And the past is in the past and Edward can now do better.

Edward is reassured until he remembers that Carlisle confessed to being Aro's lover.

"Er," Carlisle says and then explains all about his love affair but now he's married to Esme so it's all good and Aro clearly was--either not what Carlisle thought he was or something else is going on.

In all honesty, Carlisle's money is on Caius being behind Eclipse but how Aro could be ignorant is beyond him.

Edward's mind, of course, turns in the worst directions given this.

HE DEMANDS THEY SEE INGOLF, NOW!

Carlisle really doesn't want to see Ingolf. Terrible things happen when anyone is near Ingolf (Tia just admitted very vocally that she despises Amun entirely and can't wait for him to die, the Romanians thought it was great.)

Edward won't hear it, Carlisle has lied long enough.

They Go See Ingolf

Carlisle prepares himself to have a very long speech about his time in Volterra but... Edward beats him to it.

Turns out, Edward forgot that he, too, would be effected and that it wouldn't be Carlisle talking.

Edward admits to being in love with his father. Not in so many words, of course, but he admits that what he suspects is truly driving him is seething jealousy and a sense of betrayal that Carlisle could ever have been with another before Esme. And... it becomes pretty clear what Edward's talking about here.

Oh dear lord, Carlisle thinks, but he doesn't want to send Edward away either as he just... has to know now.

Well, Edward keeps going, and all of Midnight Sun comes out, including the bits where Edward's certain he's in love with Bella but what he loves about Bella is... not the parts of Bella that annoy him (read anything where she shows a hint of a personality).

None of the family's quite sure what to think but Edward is clearly having a mental breakdown. He's at this point accusing Ingolf of being a Volturi spy, the Romanians are Volturi spies, THEY'RE ALL VOLTURI SPIES SENT HERE TO MAKE EDWARD FALL APART! BUT HE WON'T DO IT, YOU HEAR?! YOU CAN'T FOOL EDWARD CULLEN!

The family sans Edward meets and debates whether Edward should be at the trial or not. On the one hand, they may seek him out regardless and will be very suspicious if he's not there. On the other hand, Edward cannot be at this trial as he absolutely will fan the flames into a war. He's admitted to wanting to do as much already.

Well, there's Aro's gift and... if Aro wants to kill them all Ingolf will have him confessing as much, otherwise Carlisle can touch his hand and easily explain just why Edward isn't coming.

Edward Doesn't Get to Come

Edward's told he's not coming. Renesmee has to be there, as their proof, but he should go and wait this one out. If all goes poorly, they will come for him, but hopefully with so many witnesses it will not and Edward will absolutely make this worse.

Edward throws a fit.

He has to be there, what about his gift?! Without Alice, he's their only insight into what the Volturi are really thinking. Maggie's gift isn't nuanced enough for that kind of information gathering.

He has to be there.

Emmett then says the worst thing possible: What about Ingolf?

Edward can only read in the moment thoughts anyway and doesn't always get the thoughts he wants/can be blocked. Ingolf makes everyone blurt out their darkest, relevant secret. So, it's not just Edward hearing it and it's things that are actually relevant.

With Ingolf around, the Volturi will be telling them everything they need to know, to everybody all at once.

Ingolf is like the better version of Edward's gift.

Edward smashes a TV and confronts Ingolf, can't you see this man can't be trusted?!

Rosalie asks if Edward hears thoughts of Ingolf that he's working for the Volturi. Edward, being in Ingolf's presence now, has to confess that no, he doesn't, he just hates the man and it feels like Ingolf has been placed on this earth to destroy him and now he fantasizes about murdering Ingolf and blaming it on the Volturi before Ingolf can take his place in the family.

Ingolf is... very surprised to hear this and not happy about it.

It also becomes clear to everyone that Edward absolutely cannot be there. The lad is mad.

Alistair has likely already left but at this point Amun gets the fuck out. Sorry, Carlisle, but he is not getting caught in the crossfire when this kid goads Aro into murdering them all as he's clearly planning to.

Siobhan, the Amazons, and Garret stay but... they tell Carlisle that Edward has to go. He cannot be there. At all. And he knows it.

Edward refuses to leave.

Carlisle tells Emmett and Rosalie to drag him off and prevent him from going anywhere near this place. Rosalie and Emmett are upset about this but... Well... They can't argue.

Of course, this means that most of the family is gone, which looks very very very bad.

Carlisle decides to forget the witnesses. GO HOME EVERYBODY. The Romanians sense this is a bust and retreat grumbling, telling the Cullens that they're cowards, and they take Ingolf with them.

Carlisle's friends reluctantly leave and in the end it's just Bella, Carlisle, Renesmee, and Esme. Who very well could now disappear with no witnesses to protect them.

The Trial Happens

Aro is surprised to see that what he heard of as an army of witnesses is... much smaller than he expected. There are, in fact, no witnesses at all. Also, almost all the Cullens are missing.

Caius suspects treachery, that the other Cullens are hiding the true immortal child somewhere and that this Renesmee is a fake, but Carlisle steps out front to take Aro's hand to explain where Edward, Rosalie, Emmett, Alice, and Jasper are and...

Oh, well, this is awkward.

Especially as Carlisle highly suspects he and the rest of his family will be murdered. The only downside would be that Aro would not obtain Alice or Edward from this and would only get Bella.

Aro... sees how Carlisle may have gotten that idea after the issue a few weeks ago.

Regardless, Renesmee is taken to Volterra for observation, Bella, Carlisle, and Esme follow. When they get there they write Edward who (somewhat rightfully) concludes that they've been taken hostage.

He is now convinced Ingolf was a spy.

(Aro is intrigued by Ingolf but never wants to meet him lest Aro confess to having murdered his sister in front of Marcus.)
