Vanessa New Orleans, LA - 2019-08-06 #InkedSoul Vanessa: I had a really hard break up and a guy from my past came back into my life. He was really trying to be with me and I was low and vulnerable. He was a tattoo artist. I think we had been reunited for a month when he said he wanted to tattoo my lips on his neck. We talked about what I would get if he got that tattoo. I lived in Sarasota and he lived in Santa Barbara so we went our separate ways. I had kissed a napkin for him before I left. He got my lips tattooed with a lock and then he came back to visit me. I told him, look, I don't want to be with you anymore but you can still tattoo me if you want in a friendship, I still love you, but it's not like that, sort of way. He tattooed it in my living room and that was that. For me, the tattoo is a reminder that I hold the key to my own heart so I shouldn't just give it away like that. Alison MUCH LOVE New Orleans, LA - 2019-04-11 #InkedSoul Alison: Some people think my knuckles say “fuck love,” which some days, that's appropriate. I always wanted my knuckles done. I had no idea what I wanted for a year or two. I used to work at this metal bar in New York and it was a random Monday night. It was winter; I was covering a shift and there was nobody there. This guy came in. He was an artist. He sat at the end of the bar with me. We were the only two people in there for most of the night. We sat there for hours and we were just talking. Somehow we got on the subject of tattoos and I said, “Yeah I'm trying to figure out what I want on my knuckles.” He was like, “Well let's play twenty questions, and I bet you by the end of it I'm gonna figure out what you're gonna get.” I was like, whatever. I got nothing to lose. He asked me all kinds of stuff about myself. They were in-depth questions about my family, my personality, all kinds of stuff. At the very end he was like, “Okay, I know what you're going to get. You're gonna get, ‘much love,’ “ and it was like he slapped me across the face. I mean, you know me. I'm pretty sassy, and I can be harsh too but I have a lot of love for a lot of people, and I'm surrounded by a lot of love all of the time and I always have been. It was perfect. BW: It is perfect for you. Anything else before I stop recording? Alison: I'll love you forever. BW: [Smile] I'll love you forever too. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw9r7tjp4R-/?igshid=erylwvs5d92x

I dropped out of school in seventh grade and went to Houston, Texas with a guy I met at a tattoo convention. I worked in his shop as an apprentice--a shop bitch. ⠀ ⠀ When I was seventeen I moved back to Memphis and opened my own tattoo shop in the back of a Harley shop and built up from there. I saw you in the rain. As the reign of a black man became seen as pain. Mahogany cloaked and driven under the seige of stars. Walking lonely on that haunted night. A memory of freedom as he took those reins. Caught the hand that once held the whip and bled so beautifully. Holding strength in his jaw. Honor in his heart and Victory in his eyes. He was stone. Rained upon but never weakened. Mahogany cloaked. Endlessly driven. Built with the gold of ebony stardust and the oil of the redeemer encasing his soul. He is the statue of love. Light. Power and possibilities. Shadowed by the poison injected into our minds. Flowing through society as we as a people become those mindless, useless, uneducated monkeys hate perceives us to be. I saw you as the Lion. A protector. A guide to walk side by side with me through life as I am as a woman also stereotyped. Beaten. Belittled and neglected. I see you painted steel. Hand of the father. Owner of the rib which so preciously holds me together. I see you man. Mahogany. Strength. Love. Light. Black. Beautiful…
