The air was thick with gunpowder and sand, heat radiating off the ground like the whole world had caught fire. Bullets cut the air in ragged screams, grenades thumped in the distance, and the world narrowed to the next breath, the next cover, the next target.
Ghost kept his rifle steady, even when his hands trembled from adrenaline and strain. The mask kept the dust from his face, but not the ache from his chest. She’d tell me to keep my head low. To come back in one piece. He could almost hear her laugh — low, warm, the sound that made his world feel human again. Every time he blinked, he saw her waiting at the kitchen counter, making coffee like nothing in the world could touch them. She’s the only one who calls me Simon and makes it sound like I’m worth something.
Soap ducked behind a half-crumbled wall, breathing hard, grinning anyway because it was either that or break. She’s gonna give me hell for getting shot at again. The memory of her hands cupping his face was sharper than the pain in his side. He’d never tell the lads, but he kept a folded photo of her in his vest — the corners soft, the colors fading. The photo didn’t smell like her, didn’t laugh like her, didn’t scold him for forgetting to eat — but it was enough to remind him why he kept moving. Every step closer to home is a step closer to her arms.
Price barked orders, voice cutting through the chaos like a blade. He couldn’t afford to let his mind wander — not here, not now — but she slipped in anyway, in the quiet between the cracks. Wonder what she’s doing right now. Probably reading in that chair by the window. God, I miss that chair. He missed the little things, the tea she’d make when she thought he was sleeping, the way she’d curl her toes under when she sat. I’m not Captain Price to her. I’m just John. That thought alone was enough to keep him steady.
Gaz pushed forward through the dust, heart hammering. His ears rang from the blast nearby, but over the noise, he could imagine her voice — calm, teasing, telling him to watch his back. If she could see me now… The thought made him smirk under the strain. He’d promised her he’d come home, and promises weren’t things he broke. Not to her. Every fight I survive is for you.
The four of them moved as one through the battlefield, but their minds were half a world away — in kitchens and living rooms, in arms that smelled like safety, in voices that knew their real names.
In the end, they weren’t just soldiers, not just ghosts, not just captains or sergeants.
They were men with something worth surviving for.
And that was what made them dangerous.
Inspired by this post by @marigoldisverynormal , answering the question of what one would do with said taxidermy pins…
Well, one would take the tiny fairy, and lay them gently on a piece of fabric covered styrofoam, tell them everything will be ok as long as they stay still. Then holding down their tiny body with a few fingers on their chest, opening the box of pins with the other hand, the small, extra thin pins, that look huge in the eyes of the tiny fairy. As one would start by placing one on each side of the little fairy’s neck, to keep it in place, while their wings are slowly spread out behind them. Such pretty wings are meant to be displayed, and the next pins are pressed gently through the tips, sides and bottom of the wings, making struggling impossible. The little thing starts to whimper at the pain, starts to beg to be let go, but they’re too pretty to let go. One would then gently caress the tiny body, spreading their legs, rubbing them gently to give slight pleasure to the pain, settling the poor thing before the next pins are placed on either sides of their thighs and calves , keeping their legs spread and open. Their arms are next, pins being placed on their side of them to keep the struggling down. One would then admire their work on how pretty the tiny fairy looked now that they were all bound and displayed, occasionally stroking their bound body just to elicit moans out of the pretty creature.
The Wrong One
I just wanted love,
but I chose the wrong one.
I’m running through the woods,
the wind howling in the moonlight.
He won’t let me be till he has me.
I run knowing this could be my last night—
heart racing, terror stricken in my bones.
But I run and I hide,
hearing his footsteps in the leaves,
rustling up his ungodly desires.
I can’t stop breathing in this panic,
I can’t breathe as I gasp for air,
drawing him ever closer.
He was supposed to be the one—
the one I ran away with,
not the one I ran away from.
But I wasn’t fast enough.
I’m a ghost in these woods,
a hole in my heart that never stops bleeding.
Love will never find me again
beneath these trees.
