My roses are giving me what I believe is their last flush this year. Growing roses organically here in my still fairly new garden in Austin is a roller coaster ride and, to be honest with you, sometimes I am so frustrated that I just want to throw in the towel. Then I get a bloom like this of ‘Belinda Dream’ and it seems to be all worth it. All of my roses are growing on their own roots and they are not even two years in this garden, so they probably have just reached their toddler stages. I guess, I have to be patient and carry on. Two days ago, at the first day of autumn, I fertilized all my roses probably for the last time this year with an organic rose and flower fertilizer. Some of them have set new buds already and I hope the others will follow suit and all of them delight me with a beautiful autumn flush. Temperatures have finally cooled down here a little in Austin and that will certainly help. We desperately need rain, though, but my roses, of course, get hand watered until natural rain arrives. Are you also hoping to see your roses bloom one more time this year? The mauve/lavender rose in the picture is Sweetness, a stately grandiflora rose with an amazingly strong citrus fragrance that I grew in my old garden in Dan Diego. I miss her, sigh! My own garden is definitely the most triste it can be right now! We had two substantial frosts within a few days here in Austin and almost everything that had been a nice green color is now a sad, depressive brown. My roses had still so many buds, all frozen off. I know it is the course of nature and it needs to happen but it still makes me feel a little melancholic. Especially since we don’t have a beautiful, pristine, white blanket of snow like many of you that covers everything up and makes the winter pretty and more bearable. So I thought I would post a rose against the winter blues! I am pretty sure that this one is a rugosa rose, most likely ‘Terese Bugnet’, that you don’t see that often here on Instagram. Maybe her sight cheers you up as it does me. It is hard to produce an almost blemish free rose here in Austin in our hot and humid, bug ridden climate, when you grow your roses organically and don’t spray. But the rose variety ‘Belinda’s Dream’ is getting the job done from time to time. Mine was growing way too long in a container that was maybe two gallons small until relatively recently when I bought her a half whiskey barrel and planted her in good potting into it. This is her first bloom she produced in her new home and it looked fabulous. I have high hopes that the flowers will get bigger and more full once the rose has established herself. I am also experimenting with her sister ‘Belinda’s Blush’, but this rose I will plant into the ground. Hope your weekend is off to a good start! I have an emotional strenuous week behind me and I am looking so much forward to some relaxation. Tonight we will have friends over. We plan to pop a bottle of Champagne to celebrate something personal and throw some fish on the grill and serve it together with oven roasted potatoes, beans, and broccolini. We only need to figure out a fitting desert. For later my husband has prepared a slide show with photos from our Germany trip that we will all watch together. It should be fun! I still can’t fully believe that it is possible to get together with friends again in terms of Covid. The vaccines have been such a blessing and I am eternally grateful that we can return to somewhat of a normal life.
