Hi there. I was wondering about instrument storage at Oberlin for those of us not in the conservatory. Is there a place where we can store our instruments other than in our dorm rooms, and if so, how much space is there if we play multiple instruments?
Since I don't know what instruments you'll be bringing, I'm going to tell you all I know, but keep in mind two things: there is probably at least one other person who plays at least one of your chosen instruments on campus, and while music is an extremely important part of life at Oberlin, you're probably not going to have as much time as you think to play multiple instruments regularly. After a long discussion with last year's students on our Facebook page, most students decided to bring one instrument with them at first (remember that you also will have to transport them back and forth each year) and coordinate with other students to make sure all sorts of instruments would be around on campus.
We actually had a couple of questions about instrument storage last year, and I think the final answer was that it is worth asking the conservatory deans if there is extra instrument storage in the conservatory if you have a large instrument (I believe that the conversation revolved around a tuba, but this could also apply to other instruments). There is also limited first come, first serve band storage space in Wilder that you can ask about at the Wilder front desk when you arrive on campus. Beyond those solutions, if you bring it, you'll be required to store it in your room.
I've seen some pretty creative solutions for storing multiple instruments in rooms (see: this photo from a single in Keep) but the two most logical spaces to store would be under your bed (you can bring bed risers for extra space) or in your closet.
