Q: What do you do when the song has a longish instrumental interlude? My fave karaoke song is “Sin Wagon,” but many places don’t elide the 45 sec instrumental break and I feel like a FOOL.
A. “Sin Wagon” is a perpetual fav and a real crowd pleaser! Don’t give it up!
I understand exactly what you mean, though. I was once interviewed on NPR, of all places, about karaoke. Scroll to 11:15 to hear the guest earnestly explaining how it’s ok to sing karaoke if you’re a terrible singer just as they bring up my then-brand-new boyfriend Dave and I shouting enthusiastically and tunelessly along to “We Built This City.” THEN, scroll on up to the 30:00 mark to hear our...KARAOKE ADVICE, in which I inform listeners that THE WORDS ARE RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. I’ve been doing this for a long time, folks. And yes, that’s my actual speaking voice. I know. Sorry. This is an excellent 45 minutes of karaoke chit-chat, by the way, and it mentions Provincetown drag karaoke, as seen in our other new question of the day! KARAOKE SYNCHRONICITY!
This didn’t make it into the interview, but I did warn people to beware of long instrumentals. They can sneak up on you and there you are, waiting, waiting, waiting to sing again, wondering what to do with yourself. The thing is, no one else cares that you’re standing there waiting. There’s no need to feel like a fool. You can pass the time by bringing a drink up with you and sipping/chugging/whatever you feel, having a quick snack, dancing, playing air guitar or drums, or just standing and waiting for the song to come back around. It’s really ok. The only thing you SHOULDN’T do is point out that there’s an instrumental break by singing the words “instrumental breaaaaaaaaaak” or “this is a really long guitar solooooooooo.” Just be patient and secure in your choices. You’re doing great.

My friend Danielle Mariscal took this really cool photo and after seeing it I was really compelled to make a song for it. Here it is, this song was made with tape samples/field recordings/and vocals. Feel free to download it if you want.
