its a lie, its always a lie, and he's pretty sure jack knows that better than anyone else does at this point. but it's one he can't stop himself from telling, one he needs to tell in hopes that one day he'll convince himself of it.
or at least convince jack.

“Nah, not about to disappear on you. I’m like a bad penny, once I’m around, it’s hard t’ get rid of me unless you’re really trying to. I just-“ he struggles to find the words briefly. How to explain the men he’s been, the things he’s done, for and to the people he’s cared about? All the things he doesn’t want to put on Jack if he can help it.
“It’s more of… traveling with me, it’s not all running and fun and danger and everybody lives, and sometimes the real monster of the story can be me. I’m trying not to be, I spend every day trying to be better than my past, but someday might come when I try and push you away. It won’t be that I don’t care.”
He does, after all. More than he can say, more than he can understand. In a way, he was ready for the way Rose Tyler burst into his life, but not the way Jack Harkness did. Jack understood the universe in a way a companion of his hadn’t in a long time, partially by the Doctor’s own design.
