“Coño!” Maia swore as she revved the engine of her car one last time only to hear it sputter out and then fall silent. This was not a good time for her to have car trouble. It was beyond dark outside, she was in the middle of nowhere (although, she was pretty sure she was somewhere near the Everly farm), and a torrential downpour had started just a few minutes ago that kept the brunette a prisoner in her own vehicle. With a sigh of frustration, she reached into her bag to grab her phone, only to realize after a few seconds of tapping the screen that her battery must have died on the drive back from Greenwich. A few of her paintings had finally sold and she wanted to deliver them to her dealer in the city. She could have just shipped them, but Maia had enjoyed the trip out of Mystic. The long drive there and back had given her a chance to clear her head.
Now, as she considered the prospect of spending a night in her car, she wasn’t so sure the whole trip had been a good idea after all. Maia shivered. It wasn’t that it was actually that cold, although the rain had caused the temperature to drop considerably, it was more the thought of being so alone in the complete darkness and having no idea what or who was out there. Her hand jerked towards the automatic lock button, pressing it, even though the doors were already locked. The second she did, headlights emerged over a nearby hill and while this was the one thing she had been praying for, she was suddenly filled with thoughts of serial killers and how easy it would be to get her to fit in the trunk of a car. As the car slowed to a stop right behind hers, she fought to keep herself from hyperventilating, her eyes glued to the rear view mirror, waiting for any sort of movement from the person inside the vehicle.
