porter house party maggie & blyth @sundrifts
Magnolia felt aimless at parties like these. Making her best effort to find a sense of independence in this sea of people, looking for Sara, half undecided still on whether she would divulge anything, but something small? It was harmless if she thought about it, but then thinking became a dangerous thing, and she had invented a dozen ways in which it could bring harm in less than an hour. Panic was bubbling in the inevitable way it did when her heart felt like it was dropping into a place too far to reach, to heavy to hold. Peeling from the thick of people into the night Maggie was shocked with an icy breeze realizing she'd abandoned her coat somewhere inside. She looked back as if she would return to find it but the cold was too welcome when her face had been flushed hot just moments before.
Stepping further into the yard, she took a few steps until standing beside Blythe. She turned her head to the sky, more stars dotting the dark sky than you'd ever see in a large city. She traced out a constellation, forgetting the name, "Do you know the name for that one?" she asked, needing to talk, needing to focus her mind on something other than those awful texts. The demand was innocuous for now, but what if? Maggie shook her head, no. No what-ifs, just the sky. Only the cold. Only right now. She traced the sky with her eyes, "When I was little, I'd put a mirror under my nose to make it look like I was walking on the sky."
