I've come across the term "champion" a couple of times (here and other places) in relation to the old gods. What does that mean exactly?

Oh hello! So I went through a couple tags and I can’t see to find any real explanation (outside of drabbles) so I’ll lay it out here:

While Greek and Roman gods would fraternize with humans and create demigods, Norse gods did not. Instead, they would remain lofty and choose a human to champion them (or, rather, the human would get their attention somehow and have the misfortune of having a god point to them and say ‘you!’). And those champions would sometimes get pitted against each other, but usually were pushed into situations where they would deal with something in Midgard for the god in question. They would also, at times, get celestial weapons as a part of their championship.

And I have some old doodles right here and here of known Norse champions.
