Interim curation and exhibition: 8.01.18- 22.01.18
Curation
The curation for our exhibition ‘Process/Progress’ was very successful. As a group, we worked well and were all dedicated to our roles within the exhibition. As previously mentioned, I took on the publicity role and felt I had achieved producing a high quality publication that not only acted as a piece information for the artists but also a gallery map and event poster. Image were taken by Jiji.
Exhibition
I was really pleased with the work of the curators for their exhibition ‘Triad’. Harriet and Hannah produced high quality publications for the artists and their statements as well as a temporary website for the exhibition that was accessible via QR code. http://triad03.businesscatalyst.com/index.html
My work was challenged by the curation group in terms of presentation; whilst the intention of presentation I had laid out in my proposal form (which format was copied from the proposal forms I had created for my curation role) was not met. I instead found a new style of experiencing my work and in actuality, I feel that it is a far more contemporary presentation. The introduction of the mirror was effective and I was given the choice as to whether I wanted it or not which displays effective communication.
Unfortunately originally my work description next to the piece was wrong which lead me to have to communicate with a curator and have it changed in time for the opening night; something that I feel could have been avoided had they read my artists statement properly that I had submitted to them.
Above are images created by myself for the publication element of the interim exhibition; I chose to take on this role within the group as I feel my strength lies in the media and writing elements of planning an exhibition. These images are going forward into a leaflet publication which will also act as a map for our exhibition.
Editorial Meeting with the Curation Team 6th December 2017
As a part of the degree show publication, we are wanting to produce a piece on the interim exhibition.
We decided to have a sit down with the curation team and discuss the process of putting on the Interim show, and their intentions and feelings about the final outcome.
Here are the notes I took during this conversation:
How did you get to the concept of ‘Intentions’?
We didn’t want to stress out the third years by asking them to produce a finished/finalised piece.
Respectful of the artists choices and decisions about their work that they wanted to submit.
They tried to stay on line of giving the artist the opportunity to do whatever they wanted to do ultimately.
Approach to the curation?
Worked by logistically navigating the spaces.
The work was meant to be in a state of unfinished, not what it was meant to be - it was about risk taking.
A way for people to seek validation, that the risk was actually worth taking.
The more exhibitions we do, the more manageable the degree show seems.
Finished works but part of an ongoing process.
Process
A chance to present ideas that you’re either insecure about or are considering for the degree show.
A chance to show whatever people need to show in order to get the relevant feedback.
There was a good dialogue between the curators and the artists.
Statements
They didn’t want to force a connection to be made by using a piece of text that was not necessarily there.
The text would invite a certain kind of response.
They wanted to create an anonymity to the work - took away the labeling and this status of who you are as an artist.
The premise was that they wanted a conversation and fresh eyes on the work.
‘In Conversation’ Review of Interim Show 6th December 2017
In Conversation - Wednesday 6th December 10:00 - 12:00 Group critique with James Quinn (NUA), Jamie Freeman (curator UEA), Kaavous Clayton (co-founder Original Projects), Henry Jackson Newcomb (founder SAVORR), Nell Croose Myhill (OUTPOST and Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts), Théo Lecrinier and Hannah Wallis (Dyad Creative)
This was a really interesting way to gain some feedback about our work from the perspective of an external audience that are prevalent in the art world.
In regards to the show as a whole, the perspective was that despite the title ‘intentions’ the whole show seemed very resolved as a whole. It was a testament to new ideas, and had allowed us to show new and exciting work. They believed the show as a whole had some professional edge to it.
In terms of personal feedback, I had a chance to speak to a few of the external people and gained some valuable insights:
Could I consider the way in which the painting was displayed - would it be better on a plinth laying flat?
Have I considered straying away from the boundaries of the canvas, working straight onto a surface or using flatter things such as board?
Opening Night
The opening night for the interim was a huge success. It was a chance for a large audience to get to see the progression of the third year students, and I was able to speak to different people about what I have been producing over the course of the past few weeks.
There seemed to be a large audience made up of a variety of different ages, including people external from the university.
