I am currently a third year Computer Science student also majoring in International Development Studies, minoring in Middle Eastern Studies and aiming for med school (:
For my International Development Studies course this semester, we are asked to take action on a development issue that impacts lives and shapes our world. The “Action Assignment” requires us to address issues of poverty, inequity, discrimination, injustice and human rights by finding innovative ways to raise awareness, if not directly challenge, the elements of neoliberal globalization that lead to marginalization and injustice.
That's where Please Pass the Plate comes in. For my "Action Assignment" I wanted to tackle the issue of food security and food waste. Please Pass the Plate is an initiative to create a sustainable system to counteract food security. It involves the donation of food “waste” from local businesses to food shelters/homeless shelters. "Waste" is in quotations because the initiative is not necessarily looking at food that is non-edible waste. Rather, it is looking at day-olds or food that was made fresh but cannot be kept for the next day and must be thrown out. Instead of throwing it out, why not put it to good use? #onepersonstrash #isanotherpersonstreasure
