6 years ago, on March 12, 2016, Johnny Depp attended a dialogue session for the “Origins Project”, in the Gammage Auditorium, on the Tempe Campus of the Arizona State University, in Tempe, Arizona.
On that night, Johnny had a 2 hour long interview session with the Origins Project Director Lawrence Krauss for a talk titled “Finding the Creativity in Madness” and also a press conference for the local news.
The on-stage discussion focused on finding the creativity and humanity in madness and how both are connected, revealing Johnny’s experience and creative method as an actor who has portrayed eccentric fictional and non-fictional characters, from Edward Scissorhands, through Hunter S. Thompson, Captain Jack Sparrow and John Wilmot, the Second Earl of Rochester, while exploring and unraveling the intricate links between creativity and madness.
The session was held in association with a closed scientific workshop in partnership with the National Institutes of Health that will be held to spark discussions of big, unanswered questions and how the brain and machines process patterns, aimed at understanding consciousness, intelligence and madness.

During the conversation it was revealed that Johnny and Lawrence became friends when he attended a talk session in Los Angeles. “I walked right up to him and said, 'My name is Johnny Depp, and you're my hero'” Johnny also said that YouTube is his "drug of choice" and that he often would find himself watching Lawrence Krauss videos.
