Luna Serrat about her grandfather Joan Manuel Serrat: "The fact that I, as his granddaughter, can say that the best thing he left me is respect and love, defines him as a man."
"The moment I realized I wanted to be an actress, I was working as a radio announcer, and I was so envious of the people who came to talk about their projects. I'd see them there, interview them, and say, "I'd love to be one of them." And I think that's when I said, "I'll do what I want, what I enjoy, and if it doesn't work out, well, I'll quit later." Luna, who dreamed of acting, was, I think, much more adventurous. I think Luna sounded great 10 years ago, and Luna today is a bit more balanced. She has more respect for the future, more respect for the economy, more respect for starting a family, and she's no longer just thinking about herself. That need to fight for everything is something I think I've lost. I remember my grandfather from childhood as a normal grandfather, and I didn't see any difference between him and the grandparents of my schoolmates. He was a present grandfather, a proud grandfather. I remember him as one of my four grandfathers, always caring for and supporting his grandchildren and family, and I think that was the key. I believe the most valuable legacy my grandfather left us all is respect. Everything about my grandfather is based on respect. Respect above all. He always said one thing: "Everything is simpler (and it's true) when you put yourself in someone else's shoes, when you understand what the person in front of you is going through, what they're suffering. Life eventually becomes simpler. We're just passing through, and there's no point in coming here if you haven't made a difference to anyone, if you haven't changed or helped someone in their life." This is something we treasure in our family, and it's the legacy he left us, the legacy I cherish, and the legacy I want to leave my grandchildren, future generations. I want to leave them the same legacy he left me. Life is wonderful when lived with love: love for yourself, love for others, love for life in general. I'd like to tell my children, grandchildren, and future generations that sensitivity is always a virtue, and to humanize this aspect of artists. I look at my grandfather and see a man who is human, who suffers like everyone else, and who, like everyone else, fears for his grandchildren. As his granddaughter, I can say that the best thing he left me is respect and love, which defines him as a human being, because he leaves us nothing else. The other things he could have left us are really not that important. I think this is the most important thing: he left grandchildren who are good people, and that, in the end, is the only thing that matters."
