Glass Vaults - Crystallise

Glass Vaults return with a slice of glimmering ambience. It's another beauty and, as with their previous releases, is available on a pay-what-you-want basis on their bandcamp page.  While you're at it, I'd recommend grabbing both their Glass and Into Clear EPs. Both are fantastic.

Appearing on the album Into Clear, the Glass Vaults "Golden," is reminiscent of the elegant and haunting beauty of Sigur Ros and the psychedelic, trippiness of Verve EP and A Storm in Heaven -era the Verve. Although I haven't been there -- and hope to visit -- their material strikes me as evoking their hometown of Wellington, New Zealand. In other words, having a warm, otherworldly sort of beauty that feels alien and familiar.

Glass Vaults - Into Clear EP

Coming from the remote region of Manawatu-Waganui on New Zealand’s North Island, there’s no doubt that Richard Larsen and Rowan Pierre have been influenced by their environment. They met at University in Wellington where they formed Vaults, now Glass Vaults. Last year the pair released the Glass EP, a mix of celestial ambiance and earthly rhythms.  

It’s been just over 12 months and Glass Vaults are back with Into Clear. Ambiance is celestial once more, perhaps more otherworldly, and percussion is secular, almost primal and a little muted. Into Clear is very much a vocal record, there are layers of Gregorian-style chorals and harmonic hooks sitting on sheets of glacial synth keys, shimmering appregios and textured washes. A kind of oxymoron, the EP opens with a shimmering clarity and fades out in a fizzing drone.

Glass Vaults - Golden

Fitting of their New Zealand landscape, Glass Vaults make such expansive and adventurous music, like some soundtrack to your tour of Middle Earth. Their new EP, Into Clear is four long and textured tracks, full of enough nuance and emotional terrain to completely engulf you. I'm sure you'll have that distinct feeling of waking up as the last fuzzy drone of this EP fades.
