There are three categories of magic native to the planet of Intul. These are core magic, also known as natural magic, spelled magic, and synthetic magic. This entry will focus on core magic.
Core magic is the most common magic and, if one has a core, the easiest of magics to use. There are two main varieties of cores: intentional and unintentional. Within intentional cores, there are four basic core magics, energy, earth, water, and air, along with dozens of refines and mixed cores aside from these.
Intentional Cores
Intentional cores have a specific magical base, and can only be used within the magics that make up their base. Though this can be limiting to some, there is much that can be done with that and a bit of creativity. Runes can also be used to channel and expand magic from cores. These are the base natural runes and a few of the more complex natural runes:
So, if we use the above as an example, those with intentional Energy cores can use heat, wind, and ice magics. These are only a small selection of runes, but any combination of base runes should be compatible with any magic sharing a base rune. If one with an intentional core wishes to use a magic that is in no way connected to their core magic, they must use an external source of magic to do so. Intentional magic can also be used directly, without any channels, but runes can add a lot of diversity to the extent of one’s magic usage.
Unintentional Cores
Unintentional cores do not have a specific magical base, but instead have specific magical outlets. Magical outlets follow the same rune system as intentional magic, but typically a person has more than one outlet, while each intentional core can only hold one type of magic. Additionally, unintentional magic can use natural runes for any type of magic, not just what their outlets overlap with. However runes are not a common resource and typically only used by those who need them or those who are pursuing careers reliant on magical flexibility.
Oddities in Cores
There are occasionally individuals who have oddities in their cores and how they channel their cores. These cases include mixed cores, multiple cores, unintentional cores without outlets, and cores with blocks.
Mixed cores hold both intentional and unintentional magic, and typically have at least one unintentional outlet. They hold a combination of the two types of magic, and tend to have a pretty average amount of storage for magic.
Having multiple cores within an individual allows them to have multiple stores of magic pulling from Intul’s magical core. They have access to significantly more magic than those with a singular core. This is extremely uncommon, usually only occurring in Shadowborns and those who descend from more than one of the four intelligent races on Intul.
Unintentional cores without outlets are somewhat dangerous if those with these cores can’t access runes to release a buildup of magic in their cores. Overloaded cores can cause extreme pain in a variety of ways, usually manifesting in headaches and becoming progressively more problematic as time goes on without the use of runes.
Cores with magic blocks are usually unintentional cores without outlets that for some reason or another are unable to use natural runes to relieve the magical buildup. These can usually be relieved with some kind of medication, and there are devices, medicines and people who can siphon excess magic, which when regularly used can prevent major side effects from this issue.
