@sleepswithvillains Right?? This author thinks “descriptive writing” means “lots and lots of adjectives,” but he has no idea how to actually describe something except in the most plain and basic way possible. His prose is somehow purple and beige at the same time, it’s almost impressive. And it gets worse whenever he writes about the Force.

Seriously. It’s more interesting to interpret how each character would act as a theoretical mastermind.

Ishimaru would be about rules, maybe to an unhealthy degree, but he’s would still be true to his morals.

I like how canonical MM Ishimaru in the 4koma comic when he gets brainwashed to be the MM, the worst thing he does is force everyone to be the best student possible. And them Mondo is the only one who opposes him because he is the only one who still believes that the old Ishimaru is still in him.

I’m sure a majority of the characters would never do any of the insane stuff Junko would do.

I can understand wanting to do it ‘for the aesthetic’ i guess. I like his costume with the cape and hat. It’s cute and it fits him pretty well. But I can’t really get into it beyond that.

@libertineangel I’m… willing to accept that the narrator being a Sith who was raised to be Sith is enough of an indicator, in context, but I agree that the infodump is badly written enough that “this over-the-top fascism is here because the author is overdramatizing fascism poorly, he just doesn’t know how to infodump without stating things like they’re facts” does need the general knowledge that Sith are going to be Like That.

(And showing a propagandized society through flat representation of propaganda is extremely lazy work, even if there is enough of a known universe to make it clear this isn’t the author’s actual belief. He sounds like he’s writing a middle-school Sith history textbook. I do not want to think about a middle-school Sith history textbook.)

So, no, he has not done nearly enough work to indicate unreliability in the narrator. He is bad enough at writing unreliable narrators that I still can’t tell if his Revan is supposed to be one or if he just can’t characterize his own protagonist in a way that makes sense.

@kazaera Belatedly: yes exactly. Karpyshyn was trying too hard to call back to the “savior, conqueror, hero, villain” line, which on some level is valid because it’s a very good line, but you’ve either got to own it as the pride problem that Revans are… kind of innately prone to, or you’ve got to actually sell it as a self-loathing ironic echo. Or both—I feel like a competent author could manage to do both pretty well. But he just—didn’t manage either.
