The 128GB iPad Is Here… Now Who Says iOS Isn’t For DJs?

If you go back to just five years ago, you could easily score an old used Technics 1200 turntable for around two or three hundred.  It was easy to find them, yet nobody felt the need to stock on up turntables – they weren’t going out of style any time soon.  Now that the infamous Techs have been discontinued, prices have risen steeply.  A brand new deck might cost you around six hundred dollars, while the used one will cost you at least three hundred.  This gives many a reason to look elsewhere, to something that is much more up to date with technology, as well as versatile.  Could this be where the iPad comes in? Apple iPads aren’t cheap by any means, but compared to the price of a new pair of tables, they are much more functional and make up for what a turntable cannot do.  The issue with this was mostly about the passivity of the iPad, but peripherals are slowly filling that gap up.  Apple recently announced that a 128gb version would be produced, which would be enough to fill a drive with a week’s worth of music.  Perhaps two iPads could become a cost effective replacement to turntables after all. http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2013/04/the-128gb-ipad-is-here-now-who-says-ios-isnt-for-djs/

iPhone/iPad iOS music making app round-up: Week 83

In case you have been living under a rock for the last ten years, here is a newsflash for you – the iPad is a decent platform to use to make music.  It might sound like I’m preaching to the choir, but there are those out there who still don’t believe that a small portable unit can be used as a means to make some serious electronic music.  What makes this hardware so great for playing with and recording music?  Well, it would have to be the developers who invested their time to take it seriously.  Without the hard work of app developers, we would be stuck with a cool device that can take pictures and read books. On the DJ side of things there are a few options such as Traktor DJ and Algoriddim DJAY – both of these being meant to use as a standalone device.  Serato DJ can be used as well, but this is meant to be used as a remote of sorts, rather than a program that can hold its own.  On the production side there are too many apps to even begin listing.  Just know that the ones that cost more money usually reflect the work that has been put into them. http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/iphone-ipad-ios-music-making-app-round-up-week-83-582094/1

Back in the days, a good backup plan consisted of bringing extra gear in case whatever you had on point failed.  For an old DJ, this means packing along an extra mixer perhaps a pair of new needles in case the ones you had got bent out of shape.  As far as music goes, there was little that could prevent a record from playing, unless it was scratched up.  Most DJs would have not been able to buy second copies of every song they had a real job aside their DJ jobs.  Today, music is much easier to obtain – but it is also much easier to lose all of it.  A lost or broken hard drive means thousands of songs biting the dust. Today, we backup our music many times over because we know that a single drop won’t scratch a song, but a single drop can destroy an entire library of songs.  DJs who buy these toyish apps for their phones might be on to something.  While they do not replace the need for an entire DJing system, they do replace the need to bring anything at all.  It might not be legit enough for a real club or venue – but its good enough for to have fun with. http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2014/02/review-splyce-ios/
