[video description: video is a tiktok by user @ipplprimates. The video features a gibbon hanging from the top of an outdoor enclosure with dense wooded greenery around the enclosure. The gibbon is "singing" making a call and we can hear other gibbons in the distance responding to the call. While doing this the gibbon moves a few times to different positions in the enclosure via brachiation, or hand over hand swinging, and continues calling with short whoops and vibrating whoaas. Gibbons are one of the most endangered primates and are even considered to be more endangered than pandas! Why? I have no idea. Heck, these beautiful little guys weren’t even featured in Planet of the Apes (Pretty sure there’s only one in the ENTIRE franchise, and only in the comics)!  

Some gibbon species have a TOTAL population of about 20 individuals! Their habitat is threatened by the continued deforestation over palm oil demands, leaving these little guys with no place to live (and even worse). They are often taken illegally and sold as pets and even as food. Please spread awareness!

Do primates like dolls or teddy bears?

Some do, some are terrified of them. Some are entirely obsessed with specific stuffies like a chimpanzee I worked with obsessed with a certain snake stuffie, or an elderly baboon who would only shift for cleaning if presented with a colorful stuffie.

Not all species can have plushies as stuffing is not safe to be ingested.

Maynard here with your hurricane Ian update: everyone is doing well, and so far no damage!

If you are wondering, yes, the gibbons still sing while they’re inside! Our loudest night house is occupied by Maynard, Donny, Nick & Elsa, and Ziggy & Erin. It can be deafening when the whole crew gets going! 🙉
