I spent a lot of time at the Northeast Organic Seed Conference (during NOFA-NY) with Stephen McComber, the selfie king (who has lived and breathed seeds longer than I've been alive) and these are his photos. 4 out of 5 raccoons prefer his Mohawk White Corn (over sweet or calico corn), which gives credit to his choice many years ago to focus on collecting and preserving the seeds (and seed stories, traditions, dances, etc.) from his people throughout the Haudenosaunee/Iroquois confederacy. He taught me a lot this weekend and I'm very grateful to him. I am also very grateful for my time with others in these photos (and beyond!), including Ira Wallace from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Lauren Jimerson from the Iroquois White Corn Project, Mary Arquette of Ahkwesáhsne Cultural Restoration Program, Katherine Chiu who I know through Farm School NYC, and Lisa Bloodnick, the bean queen, who runs a horse-powered farm near Binghamton, NY. Also, shout out to Rowen White (@rowenwhite) who creates the most beautiful seed songs/photos/prayers/poetry on Instagram, and now I can attest that she is even more profoundly inspiring and paradigm-shifting when she speaks to a crowd in real life.
