The thistle may be more commonly associated with Scotland but here in Ireland a local bee, Bombus terrestris or the buff-tailed bumblebee enjoys the flowers of Cirsium vulgare.

A fine, warm summer's day at the edge of a field but equally this could have been my garden.

The red-tailed bumblebee is classed as near-threatened but it is still a relatively common bee in the Irish countryside.

Here it is seen enjoying the flowering thistle Cirsium vulgare.
