St. Declan of Ardmore

Feast day: July 24

Patronage: Ardmore, Ireland, The Dioceses of Waterford and Lisman

Saint Declan was born a prince of the Decius (the ruling class) tribe of Celts. Baptized by St. Colman, he was the first person to bring Christianity to Ireland, before St. Patrick, though only locally. He was the bishop of Ardmore and established a monastery there. His well, known as “the waters of St. Declan”, still has healing properties. St. Patrick and St. David of Wales considered him as a friend. He died “in a narrow place beside the sea” called Declan’s Desert. Local Catholics celebrate his feast day, called his “pattern” on July 24.

Today I made my second Brígid’s cross, this time from (clean) rags, wire and rubber bands because there are no rushes here. It hangs next to Dex’s reproduction sword near the front door for now.

Saint Brogan of Ross Tuirc

Abbot of Ross Tuirc, Ossory, Ireland

Feast day: September 17

Saint Brogan (Broccán Clóen) was an Irish cleric who lived in the sixth or seventh century. He was the abbot of Ross Tuirc in Ossory and was credited with the poem, ‘Ní car Brigit búadach bíth’, on the miracles of St. Brigid.

Saint Brigid of Ireland

Feast day: February 1

Patronage: Ireland

Saint Brigid was born in Ireland to a pagan chieftain and a Christian slave. She founded the Abbey of Kildare which was ruled by a double line of abbot-bishops and abbesses; thus the reason why she holds the crosier. Her school of art, learning, and spirituality at Kildare produced an illuminated manuscript praised as one of the finest examples of its kind. (It has been lost since the Reformation.) St. Brigid is known as the "Mary of the Gael" and holds the straw cross that people place in their homes for blessings and protection. She is buried with St. Patrick and St. Columba.

Saint Oliver Plunkett

1625 - 1681

Feast Day: July 1

Patronage: Peace and Reconciliation in Ireland

Born in Ireland, he studied for the priesthood in Rome and was ordained there in 1654. After some years of teaching and service to the poor of Rome, he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in Ireland. Four years later, in 1673, a new wave of anti-Catholic persecution began, forcing Archbishop Plunkett to do his pastoral work in secrecy and disguise and to live in hiding. He was viewed as ultimately responsible for any rebellion or political activity among his parishioners. He was arrested and imprisoned in Dublin Castle in 1679, but his trial was moved to London. A jury found him guilty of fomenting revolt. He was hanged, drawn and quartered in July 1681.

Saint Finbarr of Cork

Feast Day: September 25

Patronage: Cork, Diocese of Cork

Saint Finbarr, an Irish saint, who was well educated in Kilkenny, became a monk and was Cork’s first bishop. Legend has it that “God Himself” consecrated him bishop. He founded a monastery in Cork, where students and monks gathered to learn. It became an important center of learning in Ireland. He died of natural causes.
