Carpooling Arrangements
wanted to draw something cute... florian and eohric playing a game of baton pass when they were young adults in a roving colt social band. they were besties before their band got conscripted. florian aspired to become a king's knight so he took his christian vows and, after several successful military campaigns, was allowed to own land (a bit unprecedented in the pre-ironwall era). eohric did eventually scrape together some status but never became a landowner (thus never a lord), and was stationed at the king's barracks at the same time florian was proposing his ironwall edict, at which point any centaurs who did not own land were removed from the rest of the country to live in ironwall.
florian, as the king's right hand man, spent most of his life atoning for the ways of his youth and distancing himself as much as possible from eohric and the other centaurs

What do harpy and centaur beds and other furniture look like?
first of all we have to bear in mind that there's no mass production of specialised furniture like this - all of these things are hand-made on a small scale and often don't fit every body type. in an ideal furgonomic world everyone would have the perfect thing to fit their body but this is not possible in ironwall, so many will have to make do with whatever's available. there are specialised companies in ironwall (carpenters, upholsterers, etc) who can come round to your house and fit some things but it is expensive - you are ordering bespoke furniture built to your specifications.
most people will get theirs secondhand. and one benefit of there not being this mass production of items is that those that do get made are usually very durable and long-lasting. it's not uncommon to find century-old furniture in random secondhand shops in ironwall.
the most common bed type is just a big pad that goes on the floor. it can have raised walls like a cat bed or it can be flat. historically this would have been stuffed with hay (or down if you're fancy) and meadowsweet. rags, memory foam, polyfill, packing peanuts, beanbag material, etc etc in the 21st century you can get these pretty easily with a variety of fillings. they're relatively easy to make and would be the closest you could get to mass produced stuff - and, if you're the right shape, you can just buy a regular mattress too or a big bean bag.
while some non-horse centaurs and harpies will have to spend a while in their beds, the horse types can indeed sleep standing up. lateral recumbency is necessary for REM sleep and an equine will only require three or four hours of lying flat on their side per 24 hours to be well-rested. the wall-mounted bed is not at all universal but it's kind of their equivalent to a sofa, some place to relax and maybe doze off for a short time. this is just a sloping cushion mounted on a sturdy shelf. it looks very awkward but it can help reduce neck strain from sleeping while standing. otherwise they don't need much in the way of furniture.
harpies can't have chairs with backs on them because of their tails and wings but their spine is pretty short and sturdy so back pain is less common than in humans. the chairs usually have some kind of perch pole to grip as well. they sleep like birds in a nest, no issues there. the big limitation for harpies is just how much space they can take up with just feathers. furniture can't be flush to the wall, you need to arrange the house so that you won't knock stuff off tables and shelves every time you turn around, etc.
i found my man again lol i drew the original lines for this earlier this summer as a better mannequin than the one i did on procreate, i think it captures his vibe better. but it was always supposed to have harpy clothes, something i've not rly drawn in Ironwall before, so i had to design them just now
steff here was arrested after a gig for the crime of spreading unshrouded wings and going shirtless in front of an audience.
in general, wings should be shrouded. these are expensive and heavy and annoying, but they do serve a purpose to stop your wings from being tattered by bumping into stuff while walking around at street level & using public transport. they are not good for the flight feathers, though, the magnetic closure can fuck u up. .
there's no graceful way to wear trousers with a body shape like this but you gotta try. you gotta try
No nice way to arrange these images but i wanted to draw ironwall harpy & sirenian longwing flying gear while my pencil charges... but it turns out there's not much to draw on the longwing because many distance dry-flyers* are nudists by necessity (you cannot afford the additional drag or you might have to ditch in the sea...)
steff doesn't have a flying licence so he doesn't have those specific plates but if he doesn't wanna attract attention while flying he'd probably borrow a set. the radio headset was for him a recent thing in ironwall (c. 1970s) as it had only just gotten its own ATC centre and specific airspace rules. previously it was a free-for-all and that works alright when it's just harpies but when you introduce helicopters and aircraft to the mix it's a bit more dicey. the common radio channel is a really great place to give other flyers a sample of your upcoming music releases trust me it's great and everyone loves it
some thoughts about Clothes For Horses
out of practicality the average ironwall citizen wears a blanket made for horses (even if they are not horses). the blankets are bulk-ordered by specialist ironwall tailor shops and modified on the premises, sometimes while the customer is waiting. the modifications lengthen the straps so that they can be easily reached. this is considered okay for casualwear but tacky for formal occasions.
the upper body can usually just wear whatever mass produced human clothing they like. the only item of clothing which is made specifically for these guys is the waist sash (sometimes with an additional cloth drape on the front, which can smarten up an outfit). these are people whose culture has a deep seam of embarrassment at being part animal, and this fact should be hidden if at all possible even though it isn't possible but you just have to try. the junction between fur and skin is always hidden. the orange blanket pictured above is about as skimpy as you could get away with in public. mane hair is usually shaved off for practicality's sake.
for practical work where harnesses and tack are required, these are usually worn over blankets and modified to include no reins/other control apparatus. for those for whom it is possible, horse-shoes are worn on the front feet for daily city life, and on all feet for hard manual labour or any activities/hobbies/etc which require good traction on the hind legs. shoes are usually not made of metal but of a composite into which grip studs can be inserted if necessary. the imagery of hard metal shoes is associated with counterculture movements and sometimes if you wanna look hard you can have your shoes spraypainted to be shiny. barefoot is actually fine in most circumstances
dedicated centaur clothing is stupid expensive because very few manufacturers produce it and the fabric yardage is insane so it is a class signifier. the garment shape & purpose is unisex though due to influence from dominant human cultures in the area, there's still a difference between a Stallion's Manly Robes and a Demure Filly Dress. ideally the full body is covered and the overall impression is of a human strapped to some mysterious shape idk what could possibly be under there. normal human legs i bet.
