i said a while ago that wisers start using the symbol of the hydra to martyr isenia like that becomes Her Image which in turn is ofc the rebellion's image but for more detail i think what that image will explicitly be is a hydra from the neck up (aka the thick neck bit where all the heads connect) and then three heads, two on each side like normal but the middle one has been decapitated leaving a stump. there's a lot going on here but the main points are:

hydra being a symbol of regeneration/immortality = the rebellion will never die, you cut off one head and more will grow back. extra poignant because isenia was killed via execution

number theory. 3 heads would make it a negative symbol because we know the rule of 3 is a bad omen in burnos, but specifically having two heads is a reference to isenia and nathairan of kroi - the two faces of wiser rebellion

ofc the fact that the hydra is quite possibly the thing that most belongs to hammari in the entire world, and it's been appropriated in the single most nightmarish fashion for her in particular like this was so horrid to do to her guys come on 😭😭

the concept of villainy between turisha isenia and hammari is sooooo heartbreaking to me bc it becomes a role that they pass down to each other. turisha kills isenia's family and in that she becomes the personification of evil to isenia. a truer villain there never was. the lines are clear between good and bad, with isenia stood across from turisha and delivering her death as justice. but when the war continues and drags isenia along with it, she changes. all that death and violence over years and years and years mutilates her until suddenly it is not turisha killing nathairan, but isenia killing rhys. she stands in the exact shadow of a woman she once thought to be the epitome of evil. she doesn't recognise herself anymore. she doesn't know where the harasaeons end and she begins, and then we have hammari, looking at the woman who murdered her parents, the personification of evil. a truer villain there never was. hammari is good and isenia is bad. she doesn't even know that this is a story already told once already. and in her desperate hunt to bring isenia to justice, hammari becomes cruel, and she sheds so much blood that she cannot see her own hands beneath it all, and it is only as she stands on that podium and sees shock and an ounce of fear in isenia's eyes - not arrogance, or cruelty, or the smooth indifference of a death god, but shock, fear, such mortifyingly human things - that hammari thinks for the first time that isenia is a lot more like her than she realised. she cuts her head off regardless. in this, she villainises herself to a divine degree, and the wisers rally against hammari, for she must be the personification of evil to have done such a thing. surely, a truer villain there never was...

#the fact hammari and isenia absolutely loathe one another and what they both symbolise and the tragedy of both women #is that the story is destined to end with them becoming those very things they hate until it's impossible to separate them from each other #and they KNOW IT. they both explicitly realise that they have become the very thing that ruined their lives #and they keep passing the mantle down regardless #hammari #isenia #tlq

thinking of rhys and isenia and im going to be sick im unwell my stomach is rolling heart breaking etcetcetc he wanted the best for his people he was so so scared, scared theyd all die, scared isenia might fail, scared scared scared and in that moment he thought shed save him. she whod lost her brother and found him in rhys even as she closed her eyes against the similarities she was not a big sister anymore she would never be a big sister again and rhys would die bc isenia is the face of a rebellion of a revolution she is fire come to raze the earth to make room for healing and rhys has betrayed them but he was just a boy who was scared THEY MAKE ME SICK

IT'S ALL SO INSANE rhys' biggest thing is always fear it defines his character before anything else he is scared before he is a healer before he is a soldier before he is a wiser he is first and foremost terrified. and he, like thousands of other wisers, finds a sense of salvation in isenia. she has that kind of divine omnipotence that only great leaders can have, or an older sibling. she makes him feel safe. she gives him hope. these are two things he has never, ever fathomed before, because they have never been a wiser's possessions before isenia. she changed the way their people saw the world, and he thought.... he thought he'd see the realisation of her world, stood by her side, but they both get older and the war gets hungrier and he realises that nothing is going to change. he's not going to live to see the end of war. and just like that, he's scared again. and isenia hasn't been a sister in a very long time.

#general tbos thing obviously but i love the way specifically in tlq that war mutilates the characters #like it truly takes each of them and gouges its claws down the very middle of them #there's no escaping there's no recovering there is only this endless violence #ask #rhys #isenia

THE ROAD IS LONG WITH MANY A WINDING TURN THAT LEADS US TO WHO KNOWS WHERE BUT I'M STRONG STRONG ENOUGH TO CARRY HIM HE AIN'T HEAVY HE'S MY BROTHER!!!!!!!

#but in reality it would have been v difficult. she is v strong from farmwork but she's still a 15 y/o girl #carrying a whole lad who is 100% dead weight on her back. and she carried him MILES #like let that sink in. you'd be tired after literally 10 steps w that kind of weight you'd be wanting to stop and put him down #but she never does. she stumbles and pants and sweats and cries in frustration but she never curses him or puts him down #she never stops talking to him and reassuring him and promising that things will be okay if he can just hold on #just a little longer. just hold on. she'll fix it. she has to fix it #ask #isenia

the rhys development makes it soooo much heavier that in isenia's first ever pov in ch1 she hunts a stag with a broken antler like i know i've said that is foreshadowing the beabela massacre and it is but she goes on to make this little comment and it's like yeah. his death has already been dated

#like the broken-antlered stag is a SYMBOL but on a more specific analysis it is ONE broken antler #which means there is only ONE antler left that can be used for a beabela burial it is a SINGULAR thing #and she says this generally bc that's just what wisers would use that resource for #it's the same to her as saying they'd use the hide for clothes. but it's RHYS' burial #isenia #rhys #tlq

had this thought earlier but if the ouroboros series does get published then imagine ur fav character is isenia bc u guys would be eating so gooddddddddd yeah she faces the fate of all tlq characters and has a tragic ending but if i picked up the next book in a series set a few decades in the future and my dead fave now had a CULT in her honour and one of the main guys is like her tortured mirror w her brother's name i would be popping the biggest bottles

i was thinking about jesus again (WHAT IS GOING ON ATM 😭) and how the crucifixion is used as Thee symbol for the entire religion and it's like. how fucked off would you be if the worst moment of your life became The Symbol of your cause your moment of most suffering and sacrifice was immortalised in bulk and displayed by billions for the rest of time there's such an insensitivity to it and then i was like what if there was something like that for hammari. like her killing isenia despite being so cathartic is still easily the worst moment in hammari's life it's the moment she throws everything away it's the moment she ensures it's all been wasted it's the moment she solidifies the prophecy all because she broke at the worst possible moment all because everything she'd sacrificed rang out at the worst possible time and it's immortalised in burnosian history forever. there's no escaping it. it's everywhere. and then i was like okay so if we already have That Moment what if it became a symbol in a very literal sense FOR THE WISERS bc the high council said to hammari if they kill isenia she'll just become a martyr so ofc that's what happens and one thing led to another and now i think im gonna work some sort of isenia-being-beheaded symbol (bc subconsciously that's how i've always pictured hammari killing her) where isenia is depicted AS A HYDRA. so yes you cut off isenia's head but two more will grow back in its place and the wisers will keep fighting and this war isn't over. it's taking the hydra - hammari's own symbol something that is so wholly hers - and superimposing it with the worst moment of her life, and it's printed on papers it's engraved into jewellery it's graffitied on the streets it's scratched into trees the wisers put it everywhere

isenia always telling nathairan not to touch her stuff, to leave her alone, "You're so annoying, do you ever stop?", "No, I don't want to play with you, I'm busy-"

isenia dragging him by the wrist even when he complains about his feet hurting, doesnt he know her feet hurt too? doesnt he know she's hungry too? isenia watching him cry and hating him because she doesn't get to cry, she doesn't get to ask for his comfort, she's the big sister it's her job to protect him- she never signed up for this.
