Your brother used to be the tallest person you knew. Sometimes, he’d hoist you onto his shoulders, or carry you around in his arms. Your father used to chide N’klaus on how much bigger he was, being the older sibling by eight years; but he was anything if not careful.

‘Inseparable’ your father had described the both of you. ‘Insufferable’ your mother had said.

Inseparable as he plucks you from the ground and makes whooshing noises, so you could pretend you were a bird in flight. Insufferable as he snuck you out of the house at night to watch the stars shine overhead. 

Inseparable as you make breakfast together in the early hours of the morning when you snuck back home, insufferable as you make tiny pancakes and insist that it’s cereal. The first time you do it, N’klaus laughs so loud you’re scared he’ll wake up your grandfather; but even your brother isn’t dumb enough to make that mistake.

Pancake cereal. After that night, that’s what you have after your nightly excursions. A little celebration with N’klaus for escaping yet another screaming match between your parents.

One night, as he tucks you into bed, he tells you; “We’re gonna get out of here,” “Really?” “Yup, me, you and Dad. We’re gonna waltz out of here together,” He said it with such conviction, it had to be true.

After all, N’klaus had no reason to lie to you.
