“Thoma, where are we going?”
Syn couldn’t help but giggle as Thoma carefully steered her towards whatever this “surprise” was supposed to be. Her eyes covered by his hands as he gently pushed her forward, making sure she didn’t trip. A feat in itself considering she could do that even with her sight. She knew from heart the layout of their shared home, so it wasn’t hard to figure out their destination was the living room. Even still, this game they were playing still had her excited.
“Almost there,” Thoma assured her. A few more steps and then he pulled her back against his chest to hold her still. “Ready?” She hummed in response, and he smiled as he pulled his hands away from her eyes. “Surprise!”
Syn blinked a few times, taking in the sights around her.
The room smelled of pine from the Christmas tree that sat tucked neatly into the corner. The fairy lights that were strung around it brightly illuminated the rest of the room in an array of sparkling colors that reflected off the strings of tinsel. The gifts that both Thoma and Syn had wrapped for each other sitting neatly under the tree on the purple skirt that circled the base. Sitting in the middle of the floor was a kotatsu, with a few items on top of it. Mandarin oranges sat in a neat pile in a basket on the corner of the table. There was also a pizza box in the middle of the table.
Holiday traditions were a little odd when it came to Syn’s family, and yet Thoma had remembered the ones she’d told him about. He’d even managed to mix in his own traditions from his own family. A perfect mixture of their differences shared together. The whole thing brought tears to her eyes as she turned around to look up at Thoma.
“Thoma,” she squeaked softly, her mismatched eyes meeting his emerald ones. “This is absolutely perfect! When did you have time to do this?” They had both been decorating a little at a time, the tree of course had always been up with lights, but the tinsel and little ornaments, and the kotatsu was new. They had both been so busy lately with work as well, so when?
Thoma smiled, pulling her against his chest once more, his arms wrapped around her. He leaned down and gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead before looking back into her eyes that shone with the lights on the tree. “I was hoping you’d like it,” he said softly. “And don’t worry about when, I found some time,” he added. His grip around her loosened, giving her the chance to pull away. “Now, there is one more tradition, right?” he asked her.
Syn nodded and leaned up onto her tippytoes to kiss him softly on the lips, pulling back after a few seconds with a bright smile. “One gift on Christmas Eve,” she confirmed.
Thoma chuckled softly and nodded. “Go pick one out and we do a gift exchange after dinner,” he said.
