maam that twenty year old doesn't know what a file directory is and is extremely confused by the concept of something not having an app or conversely there being differences between an app and a website. they grew up using a phone, or a laptop, or a tablet. maybe a PC. however, consider that using something does not mean you understand it, especially not when tech companies do their best to hide the actual functionality behind fancy ui and apps. many many people won't even download a new browser for their phone if their current one sucks. it came like that! changing something about it would break it!

what is one (1) thing you are most surprised by from yourself in handling this global pandemic/2020 fuckery?

Sorry, anon, I’m drawing a blank. Mostly all I can think of, both joking and not, is how bad I am at it.

Now, admittedly, that’s a rough take and not a particularly nice one! Not for myself, not for anyone else. Especially since, from a purely objective standpoint? I’m fine. My family and friends are mostly safe, I haven’t had to worry about job security or having to risk my health to keep working, so on a purely basic needs level I’m pretty well accounted for.

But, here’s some things I’ve learned:

How much I like being alone in a crowd. Without the crowd, it’s a whole lot less fun

Apocalypse jokes don’t do it for me. Like, they really really don’t do it. I get some people feel better making them, but they don’t work for or on me and mostly make me want to snap a bunch of pencils.

I hate routines and I’m bad at them, whether they were going to the office everyday turned to logging in from home every day, making a million Zoom plans, or what have you.

Actually, that last point in particular has surprised me. When I was going to work, it’s not like I went out a lot afterwards, but I did, sometimes, with coworkers. Or I would go to a coffee shop to write for half an hour, or let myself be distracted with a conversation, or something. And I didn’t realize how much those little breaks were things I needed, that I wasn’t content with comfortable grooves.

I saw a post on here once that was like: “the most freeing thing you can do as a woman is realize you can just leave the house looking like shit”

that changed my life.

you’re not a decoration. you’re not just something nice to look at. 

you are allowed to exist in this world and be absolutely, unabashedly unappealing on a visual level. you can just...go out, and not dress up, or put any effort into making people think you look good.

it started with small things for me, like going to the grocery store or the gas station. it took so much time, and so many tiny acts of courage and bravery, and so many moments dismissing my worries that the people around me thought I was ugly. 

who cares? I’m not here for them. I’m here to put gas in my car and go. that doesn’t require me looking good.

it’s honestly helped my agoraphobia so much, and my social anxiety. 

I used to not be able to leave the house with frizzy hair, or without a bra on (I have large, visibly uneven breasts - a full cup size and a half of a difference, it is noticeable when I don’t wear a bra,) to the point where I would let important life bullshit like paying my bills and running errands go undone for weeks, if I felt too bad about myself to leave the house.

obviously I still like to get gussied up from time to time, and I still have fun with makeup when I’m feelin’ it, and I still enjoy receiving compliments about how I look.

but I don’t feel obligated to do any of that or seek any of that, not anymore.

you can be ugly. you have my permission. you don’t have to look good to leave the house. go live your life.

800% of my feelings about tatooine are either about 1) how many generations away from slavery everyone is and the way that shapes the social fabric of the planet, and 2) the fact that it’s basically a mob boss-ruled hellscape where water worth more than imperial credits and jabba regularly demands a share of all moisture harvests for “protection”
