the way a significant portion of king’s novel focuses heavily on the history of racism in derry & mike is just about the main character & essentially the protagonist of the story & mike’s loving father is not just a significant character but arguably one of the most important characters in the novel. & the movies just. make up a completely random & forgettable totally different backstory for mike & erase his fathers entire character.

hm. it’s so complicated because I do love these movies but Jesus fucking Christ. let’s talk about the extremely blatant racism from the creators. like. I get so mad every time

also “look how a little fear makes a paper man crumble” is such a good line. like fuck butch bowers but that line is raw as shit.

and like. a less often voiced but very important (imo) criticism of the new it movies is the manic pixie dream girl-ification of berverly marsh. it’s a common issue with book to movie adaptions - the romance (especially between kids. especially when it’s subtle in the book incarnation) is exacerbated. but not to be all “well in the BOOOK” but well in the BOOK - yes beverly is sexualized. yes king is imperfect. the child porn sewer orgy scene, we’ve all seen it. but the majority of the book is about the losers club friendships & beverly is every bit as much a messy member of the gang as everyone else. the movies tell a different story. she is such a consistent love interest above acting as the individual member of the friend group she is & it makes me sad

the contrived problems between the losers & the love triangle & the completely unnecessary temporary friend breakup in the first movie would totally make sense IF this was another mini series possibly with multiple seasons. I’m not opposed to some changes in book to tv show or book to movie adaptations - that’s just how different forms of storytelling work. but this shift of focus - this contrived drama - just didn’t work in movie format I’m sorry. it’s not part of the book where the losers solidarity is very much the point. they could’ve used that time to give us more of mike & his father if they didn’t make up an unnecessary backstory for mike & erase his father’s character. they could’ve used that time to show us the history of racism & homophobia in derry that is not just a small part of the novel but part of its main themes. they could’ve used that time to allow the character kay mccall to exist at all! the whole “oh they didn’t have time movies are different than novels” thing is a fun excuse until you realize how much unnecessary conflict that’s not even part of the book is added for No reason 🙃
