I think of Kanaya less as "a main character who got shafted" and more "the only secondary character who lived."
It is sometimes difficult to determine exactly who is a main versus secondary character in Homestuck, since it often seems to shift. For example, the trolls weren’t originally intended to be a big part of proceedings! And are the alpha kids secondary because they only appear in a relatively small sliver of the story? What about Jade, one of the betas and so presumably a major character, who basically fell off the radar post-Cascade?
I am inclined to view the surviving meteor trolls (sans Gamzee, who alas was downgraded from character to plot device at some point) as MCs alongside the alphas and betas, with Vriska hanging onto the list like some sort of unshakable affliction. (For the record, when I say ‘alphas and betas’, I mean all ten, thank you very much, whatever canon thinks. :P ) That tends to be reflected in terms of TLC screentime, although that is partly because those individuals are placed best to be plot movers and shakers. We will also do our best to give most of the secondary cast a reasonable amount of closure, although that will be skewed more toward the end. Alas, minor characters like the dancestors are mostly beyond our scope. But we’re trying our darnedest to give as many people as we can a fair shake. It seems only right. And if that means upgrading a few people’s status, even better.
