i dont know sanskrit! i am a white person in minnesota and have lived in whitey whitevilles all my life! how am i supposed to know the phonemic inventory of sanskrit and what dentals and palatal consonants it has?? we’re not supposed to look it up???

also remind me of what counts as a lingual again? because the way i remember it that’s a pretty broad category that covers sounds made with the tongue + other speech organs

so, like, not labials bc no tongue...yes coronals because well yeah...dorsals use tongue back against velum (also hard palate but palatals also coronal so w/e), uvulars count?, uvula and glottis and jazz are speech organs but are they speech organ-y enough

well glottis wouldnt count anyway since h and glottal stop and all those are laryngeal and don’t use tongue

huh...if linguals only do the speech organs that actually move, like lips and teeth and tongue, then...it is literally a synonym for coronal.

hmm. if lingual just meant tongue + any speech organ, then it would be coronals including palatals and velars and maybe uvulars?? would vowels count? they use tongue kinda i mean the names for them are based on tongue. ooh. and lips, too, with the rounded/unrounded distinction. but that’s. hmm.

so. the second definition has to be the one because all the examples of linguals include alveolars (and JUST alveolars, how maddening, I may forget the exact definition but at least I remember it’s not just alveolars...can’t exactly blame them, though, english has very few other coronals and the ones we do have aren’t usually neatly represented with the latin alphabet. i mean. there are the ‘th’ sounds. interdentals. but that takes longer to explain, since there are two phonemes we write as ‘th’ and why do we do this to ourselves

so what this all amoutns to is any non-retroflex coronal. which makes sense because. retroflex is a tongue position. not exactly apical or laminal because. too curly. too underneath the tongue. so anything +anterior or +distributed blocks the thing. well, except /j/, but that’s because it’s a glide. just put a [-cons] in the root and you’re good to go.

So how does this go, then? The whole coronal node spreads to the nasal, with the [-ant] being the only visible change since all three are already [-distr]. and it’s all smooth sailing unless a +ant or +distr contoid shows up and says not today, motherfucker?

if the coronal node is being delinked so that the PLACE node now links to the other coronal node...

dorsals are on another plane. labials are on another plane. placeless has no plane. no intersection. Dot away.

but if something with a coronal node pops up, then there’s a problem. intersection. kaboom. contradiction. OBJECTION!

So that explains that. But then how does the obstruent place assimilation fit into this? Should I just say it’s environmental? It’s worded like environmental stuff. But I’ll write a thing on what it’s doing, I think. Or wait, I already did, didn’t I. I’ll just have to reword it a bit since it’s not a level above anymore. All right. Cool stuff. All I need now is to finish the actual writing. And to figure out how to make the lines for the tree. Probably with insert shape, lbr. Okay.
