I was Very Into the whole series as a kid don't get me wrong but even at the time, and more and more the older I get, I feel so strongly that the best and most interesting worldbuilding for Redwall was in the original book, where a pack of rat pirates steal an entire goddamn horse and cart and 'barn cat' and 'church mice' aren't charming coincidences but a normal sized cat in an actual barn and normal sized mice who live in a regular church
#it's BETTER.#[cough] also cluny's army forcibly conscripted local rats and weasels etc explicitly#and the initial reports of 'a vicious army of rats' get some crowd-chatter pushback for 'giving rats a bad name'#instead of the later books being like. you know how some animals are Good and others are Evil#as a kid mossflower was my favorite book but again even at the time I was SO :{ about the retconning of squire gingevere#'ohh and the Nice wildcat (bigger than a mouse but not That Big!) goes and builds a farm. for himself. him sized. animal person sized.'#'and that's what that was in Redwall' no it FUCKING wasn't BRIAN.
