opened my windows last night and played my much longed-for vinyl copy of Joni Mitchell’s Blue and baked a pie. i love to bake pies, mixing the pie dough by hand. sifting flour, the world grows quiet. what a joy it is to make something with your own hands, to ask patience of yourself, to let the house fill with the sharp-sweet rhubarb smell. 

i work in an office all day, a job earned after four years and an advanced degree, and yet the satisfaction i get pulling a pie warm from the oven is greater than the sum of all that.
