Sonic... canon
So last night, I watched the Sonic movie. As I was watching it and was trying to find things to compare it to, everything came back at once. The games, the comics, the movies, the TV series....
and yeah this film was tamer than all of it.
I’m not going to spoil the film, but i’ll just say that it follows it’s own story that they made, and clears a few other questions up. If people want, I can come back to that in a month’s time. (disclaimer: I’m not covering everything that the sonic franchise made, just the things that I saw as a kid and remember.)
Now, time to jump into the weird world of Sonic.
The Games
Starting off with what I’d consider to be the tamest, Sonic game lore is a little over the place as almost everything is a standalone unless it directly has a sequel (like idk who that parrot guy from Sonic Riders is, but apparently he become a rival of sonic’s)
Birds are Foes: The Game
I think I should start off with the old classics, stuff you’d get on the n64. The games are practically an arcade, with no major lore as you just want to get through the levels to defeat robots that store little animal babies (??) and collect as many rings as you can since they somehow link into your mortality. At the boss stages, Dr Eggman (some games have Dr. Robotnik, there’s a weird blend that is clarified/revised in the new film actually). Eventually you bump into Miles and knuckles who are sidekicks that can fly (how an echidna can fly or glide is beyond me - i think he’s some voodoo man), yadda yadda.
I actually really liked this cover art, the checkers tie it into the theme of the island nicely and you can immediately tell who plays what role in this game.
Sonic 3D exists despite my pleas, and is a very trippy experience where you have to run around an isometric plane without crashing into every damn wall or off a cliff. Honestly the thing that irritated me the most was the fact that there was no map, so you would waste time running back and forth, lost forever until the timer ran out or you gave up.
KILL IT WITH FIRE, PLEASE. Anyways, It’s plot: Dr. Robotnik steals a bunch of birdies and also shoves them up his aa into his robots again, and then sonic comes along to rescue them and take them home through his magic ring portal.
This is getting a bit too long, so i’m going to skip a few games and get to the weirdest modern game of sonic that I know:
SONIC UNLEASHED
I mean, YA likes werewolves right? and most of the audience at the time were growing up, right? The PS2 had many good games on it, but this? I’m not so sure. Cinematically it looked pretty damn good at least. I was probably only 8 or 9 when I played this and I wasn’t that good at games (I only got good the past two years) so the mechanics annoyed me and I gave up, so i can’t give you the whole story. So here’s what I know: Sonic is on Earth with his usual buddies, chilling out, when Dr.Eggman does some wild stuff and suddenly the world is breaking apart and you only have a few days left to live. Kinda like Majora’s mask, but instead of a creepy moonface glaring at you, the moon curses sonic to become a were... wolf? hedgehog-wolf? Basically he turns indigo and toothy with weird stretchy long arms that he uses to climb around. Him and Tails fly around in Tails’ plane going from country to country during day and night phases, attempting to save the world before it literally rips apart. Honestly i’m not sure how everyone isn’t dead already the moment it starts happening, since gravity and magma would just mess with everything.
Seriously, this game actually has incredible graphics. especially for a PS2 game. Shame about the rest of it.
Well, This segment went on for longer than I expected, so I’ll make a second part later consisting the fun and confusing world of the sonic comics and tv series (specifically sonic underground).
Hiya! What is your favourite sonic?
oh, I really love 11's sonic, that one's my favourite
The magical feeling when you put one of your ocs in a Pokemon Universe and turn her into a Gardevoir+ Charizard fusion.
