James Pyman (EAST03) is another artist who features in Dear Lynda... who has a concurrent show, this time at the Hepworth in Wakefield, until July 2013.
" The artwork is titled Upper Mill and takes the form of a wrap covering the early 19th century Grade II-listed watermill situated opposite to The Hepworth Wakefield in the gallery garden.
Pyman has made a series of meticulously hand-drawn illustrations which capture and record the walls and features of the watermill. These drawings have now been reproduced to life-size scale and printed onto a building wrap which covers the building. This process enlarges the pencil marks, tones, dots and scratches of the original drawings and converts them to the marks, blemishes and textures of the bricks and plaster, creating a three-dimensional drawing set within the riverside landscape.Â
The wrap captures a specific moment in the life of the Upper Mill as its status is caught between its past, as part of the cityâs industrial heritage, and its future within the grounds of The Hepworth Wakefield. As future plans for this important historic building are progressed, the artwork will help to secure and preserve this aspect of the cityâs industrial heritage.
Upper Mill will be installed until July 2013, and joins a series of outdoor artworks situated in the gallery gardens that provide a waterside setting for art that can be enjoyed year-round. These include a grass prototype sculpture by seminal artist Richard Long and an outdoor site-specific work by Heather and Ivan Morison, The Black Cloud."
Interestingly Richard Long selected EASTInternational 1996 and Heather and Ivan Morrison featured in Outwardbound,an exhibition held at the Norwich Gallery in 2002, there was a related edition: Ivan Morrison's Garden 2001-2002, an edition of 100, priced at £10, we still have some left in the Gallery to purchase. Ivan Morison's garden, 2001-2002 is a set of 8 CD sized cards, each with a description of the garden printed onto it. Held together with a band, signed and numbered on the reverse. Heather and Ivan Morison - Little Shining Man
"Little Shining Man is a sculpture that has the potential for flight. The design of the structure is based around the tetra kites of Alexander Graham Bell, multiplied out into colliding cubes that take their form from the cubic formations of the mineral Pyrite. A double wing module has been duplicated and arranged into a tight cellular structural arrangement that appears as a heavy, un-flyable mass. Utilising lightweight materials and the symmetry of the module and composition, it is able to fly freely and steadily. The kite flown in the images is one section of an arrangement of three, that come together to create the final piece of sculpture that is taken own from display once a year to be flown in St. Aubinâs Bay. There were several challenges in realising Little Shining Man. The structure had to be as strong and light as possible in order to fly, but had to return to earth with minimal damage so it could be installed as a piece of sculpture. Carbon fibre rod and Cuben fibre, a hand made composite fabric used primarily in racing yacht sails, achieved the perfect combination of strength and weight. The visual impact of the fabric produces an ethereal sense of depth and refraction that gives the heavy mass the lightest touch. Queen & Crawford designed a joint system, the CKJ_01, a universal Nylon joint that would handle every connection in the composition. They work closely with 3TRPD in Newbury who are at the cutting edge of the Rapid Prototyping Industry. Printing the joints allows design, production, testing and refinement in a short time frame. The material is light and strong, perfect for this application. More than 23,000 individual components make up the complete structure. Entirely assembled by hand; from design through to delivery more than 16 months of work. Matthew Higginbottom, Queen + Crawford, 2011".
