now normally I'm the kind of freak that'd play Izek straight outta canon.

but since my players are looking for a more family-friendly Curse of Strahd campaign and have specifically veto'd creepy dolls, incest vibes, and realistic torture, I've done the only responsible thing and just turned him into a himbo with a heart of gold. he's good at his job and bad at basically everything else.

and we're just gonna kind of ignore the entire Ireena sibling subplot because my guy's already got a demon arm and works for a failing public official, I don't think my players are so invested in Ireena that they'll absorb a long-lost-sibling plot twist on top of that.

They always acted weird towards you.

As a younger sibling of Freya Van Furiana, you had to tag along with her during her many visits to the Omerta Duchy. As your parents wanted her to seduce the future Duke.

As she was a close friend of Ellenia Van Omerta, you tagging along with her, made you two acquainted. The same goes for the future Duke, Izek Van Omerta, the one your sister had to seduce.

Your mother was always very insistent on sending you along with your sister to their household. Yours not so keen eyes never saw the way she tended to tremble, when you didn't want to go there, throwing a fit.

Perhaps sensing something wrong?

These two kids immediately took an interest in you, being very friendly and kind.

You felt overwhelmed with their affections and attention, as they were anything but that to everyone else. You tried to avoid them to the best of your abilities.

What you never knew was the fact that when you were avoiding them, they were lashing out of your older sister. What did you told her?! What made her avoid us? Answer us Freya!

Basically your every discomfort is Freya's fault in their eyes, that quickly became her biggest fear. She spends the most time with you, it doesn't matter that she is your sister, she's taking you away from them.

And they can't have that.

They both are aware of the cruel nature of the world, yet you are so pure and untainted by it. They want to- no.

They need to protect you from the sorrows and pain, that will await you, if they leave you alone. If someone were to taint you-

Especially fond of this mindset is Izek. He is your knight after all, sworn to protect you till his dying breath.

Ellen tries her best to distract you from the rude nobles kids, having grand tea parties with her in the garden and with Freya.

The feeling of unsettling around them never disappeared.

Even when you all got older and yet, you decided that it was only a part of your imagination. Children really does have a huge imagination, don't they?

Your whole life they were nothing but kind to you, they would never hurt you.

All the moments when you were throwing fits about coming to them leaving you extremely embarrassed, they loved it, wanting to make up for them, for all this time spent together.

It is good to be unaware, right? It's in your best interest to make it last that way. They will protect you from the world, whatever it takes.

I just realized that I don't upload anything related to Izek! With how much I like Izek, he deserves the redemption arc yaaas (The party where I am forgive him and gave him a chance)

So here are some sketches I made of him.

6. Did you make any NPCs more sympathetic than in canon? Or less sympathetic?

i really tried to make victor a bitch. upon meeting the party he was a loser who was guarding the tome of strahd and admitted to killing two people within about a minute of conversation. he continues to be snarky and abrasive at every opportunity and STILL my party likes him. i can’t get them to abandon him. so now i gotta find some plot hook for him (stay tuned on that)

strahda has been changed to have a backstory that’s more sympathetic to my players. she’s a lesbian who was trapped in a marriage with sergei because she was being passed over due to sexism (in my game, sergei and tatyana are related rather than sergei and strahd), and her snapping point was that the man she’d married was upset she didn’t love him.

7. What's your named character death count so far? (Players, friendly NPCs, villains.)

izek (confirmed) - captured in the blue water inn, taken to a cave and interrogated, then executed

lydia and vargas vallakovich (presumed) - a riot started at the festival of the blazing sun and they were thrown into the woods covered in raw meat juice. could have theoretically survived but haven’t made an appearance yet

fiona, karl, and nikolai wachter (confirmed) - off-screened by another npc for being banites

sasha (on general principle) - i may have gotten rid of baba lysaga, but i kept her house! it’s named sasha. died when the party removed the gem from inside of it to give it back to the martikovs

rahadin vhenikatchu (confirmed…?) - possessed by the warlock’s patron and then walked off the drawbridge outside castle ravenloft. his body might be mush, but maybe something could be done with his bones…

sylon donahue (confirmed) - resident of the abbey, killed to start a murder mystery. he barely counts

ezmerelda d’avenir (confirmed) - fell unconscious due to smoke inhalation during the fall of argynvostholt, then fell from the third floor to the ground when ireena’s grip slipped. the party was told she was dead before she fell…

vasilka greene (confirmed, but resurrected) - stabbed to death and hung from a tree, with a message carved into her back to bait the party into looking for her murderer. she was immediately taken up to the abbey, and her injuries were mild enough to be treated via raise dead. the abbot lost their shit and immediately resurrected her

for a grand total of 11!
