“He Was a Unique Dude:” Early Red Hot Chili Peppers Guitarist Jack Sherman Dead at 64
Early Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Jack Sherman - who played on the band’s self-titled 1984 debut - has died, the group said in a statement.
Sherman was 64; no cause was listed.
“We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed,” read a statement on Facebook early Aug. 22. “... He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between. Peace on the boogie platform.”
Sherman in 1983 replaced, and in 1985 was replaced by Hillel Slovak, and co-wrote much of ’85’s Freaky Styley. He is one of two RHCP guitarists - along with Dave Navarro - who was not included when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“I’m being dishonored, and it sucks,” Sherman told Billboard in 2012.
The guitarist went on to do session work with Bob Dylan, Charlie Sexton, John Hiatt and George Clinton, among others.
“His tasteful and groovealicious guitar stylings and one-of-a-kind personality will be sorely missed,” Sherman’s pre-RHCP band, Andy and the Rattlesnakes, wrote on Facebook. “Sending love and condolences to his family and friends.”

RIP Jack Sherman 1956-2020
Guitarist Jack Sherman has died at age 64. He was the guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers from 1983-85. He also played in several other groups and on albums by George Clinton and Bob Dylan.
Sherman joined RHCP and replaced Hillel Slovak. He was in the band for such a short time, but in that time he played on the band’s 1984 self-titled debut album. In early ‘85 Slovak re-joined the band and Sherman was let go. While he didn’t play on the 1985 album Freaky Styley, Sherman did co-write several songs on the album. He did return to appear on a few tracks on their 1989 album Mother’s Milk.
Like a lot of people, I got into RHCP years after that debut, then went back and discovered some of the early stuff after getting into the late 80s / early 90s era. Sherman deserves credit for his contribution to early RHCP, notably “True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes”, “Jungle Man”, and “Catholic School Girls Rule”.
