Since you're getting a lot of fashion asks lately and this seems up your alley: I've been having the hardest time finding nice, classy, semi-formal trousers that are work/uni-appropriate. Would you have any online recommendations?

My European go-to for this kind of thing would be Massimo Dutti. (I don’t know how easy they are to track down outside of Europe though because I’d recommend trying on before ordering because their sizes can be tricky.) Otherwise, my life go-to J.Crew has a some more formal options like these wide-leg wool trousers or these black watch plaid trousers (I love love those last ones, but I think their appropriateness for work depends on your workplace – I’d definitely wear them to work at uni). Otherwise, your best bet is going to be the likes of Ann Taylor, LOFT for more affordable and youthful takes, Banana Republic for safety, or even Talbots if you’re ready to ignore the potential “Business Mom” vibes and find the good pieces. Of those three, my loyalties are with with Ann Taylor (my grandma worked for them for twenty years), but Banana Republic and Talbots have good options as well and I appreciate that Talbots is more flexible with sizes (also it’s not a bad sign that they have all lace trousers). LOFT has more casual things, but they have a few options like these and these.

To the anon who struggles with personal choices that happen to align with patriarchal expectations: you can also look at it another way. Is NOT choosing a thing BECAUSE it's a patriarchal expectation a choice any less influence/defined by the patriarchy? It seems to me the best way to make personal choices that are genuine is to make them the way you would do if there wasn't any patriarchy at all.

Hello Olivia, I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I'm seriously considering grad school, but the tutoring part seems a big hurdle for me because of social anxiety. I've improved, but speaking in front of crowds is still extremely difficult, unless I'm very passionate about the subject and 100% sure of my knowledge. In your experience, is this something you can work through, or will it seriously impede my studies?

Thankfully, in my situation, the tutoring I do is one on one, so I don’t have to speak in front of big groups yet. Still, one on one can be very stressful. I used to be terrified before every session, but I found that just going ahead and doing it anyway helps loads because when you get into what you’re doing, then it stops being as scary. I find the same to be true when I’m presenting in front of a class or even at a conference. People are there because they want to be there and so they’re there to learn things – they aren’t going to boo you or laugh at you. You are, most likely, going to be absolutely fine.

both of these are great interpretations/alternate stagings! i’ve seen some that come close to them being shocked and despairing, but haven’t pulled it off very well. and the alcohol/drugs interpretation makes total sense (definitely didn’t think about lsd as an addition, though, seems legit). i also like how these two options are complete opposites, despite both being believable.

So yesterday I went to my first JCS live theatre show (with Ted Neeley!), and I'm still reeling a little. When I've straightened out my thoughts, would you be interested in a bit of a review?

oh, definitely. Superstar is fairly lighthearted and also cathartic--it gives you a point to the musical, telling you the message outright so you understand the purpose of the doom and gloom. the other less-depressing moment is King Herod’s Song, which is this eleventh-hour surprise comedy song and the only real moment you can consistently count on for a laugh throughout the play.

cf: Sweeney Todd and Jekyll and Hyde, which don’t have that eleventh-hour comedy song, or twelfth hour, or any hour. re: catharsis, ST has the Ballad of Sweeney Todd that technically explains the musical but doesn’t seem to give it a point other than haha cannibalism and death. J&H has a couple of songs that get close, but it’s always more of Jekyll trying to convince himself that he can still win than him reflecting on why things have gone wrong.

then there’s Les Mis, Spring Awakening, Into the Woods, etc, all of which are tragic, but don’t have the same well that’s depressing feel because each has a song near the end (Beggar at the Feast, The Word of Your Body (reprise), Your Fault) that are pure comic relief, and each has a “here’s the point of this tragedy” song (Finale, Those You’ve Known, and both No One Is Alone and Finale/Children Will Listen). 

i count all of these musicals as tragedies, but you come away from the second group a lot less depressed. JCS falls into that category too, thanks to Superstar. (i’m not sure about them changing the order around--they probably did at some point, but i can’t confirm.)

You've read Corpus Christi! *happy noise* What did you think of it? I stumbled across it a while ago in a Judas-research related frenzy, and on one hand I really liked it but it also seems to be... missing something?

actually, my college put on a production of it, and i saw it a week after i listened to JCS for the first time! for someone not christian, that was an absurdly religious week of my life…

anyway, i really enjoyed it! it’s really intense and, as i’ve mentioned before, i’ve never read the bible (though i’m beginning to rectify that situation), which made it slightly more confusing than it was probably intended to be, as i tried to sort out what was real and what wasn’t. actually, i just looked up the play, and found out there’s another level to the unreality of it–our version had Jesus as a trans woman, Judas as a woman, and the other apostles were a mishmash of gender identities (that didn’t always match the actors’). perks of a (hyper)liberal college, i guess! anyway, it was a really cool way to experience the story of Jesus, and i’m always here for things conservatives hate. 

i think i can see what you mean about it missing something, though i’m not sure i could define exactly what it is. (i mean, the answer is probably rock music, but…) it also didn’t quite live up to what i was expecting–being from Texas, i imagined the setting would play into it more than it did. regardless, it was fun, and a few of my friends were in it, so i enjoyed it a lot.
