Crystal Palace Demanding £6m for Patrick van Aanholt After Rejecting First Offer From PSV
Crystal Palace 2017/18 Season Preview
Author: Declan Harte
This will be an historic fifth season in the top division of English football for Crystal Palace, a feat they have not achieved since World War 1. It’s been an inconsistent 4 seasons thus far. Initially starting strong, finishing 11th and 10th in their first two seasons, they have followed this up with 15th and 14th place finishes, only just avoiding a relegation dogfight last season. However, this season has the potential to be their best yet.
With the surprising retirement from club football of Sam Allardyce last May, Crystal Palace were left without a manager going into the Summer break. The club acted swiftly and have brought in former Ajax and Inter Milan manager Frank De Boer. At 47, he is still young by managerial standards, but has plenty of experience to his name.
De Boer got his start at Ajax where he was incredibly successful. Winning 4 Eredivisie titles. This led to rumours of a move to the Premier League to clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool - he even turned down an interview for the Anfield job. After unsuccessfully defending the Eredivisie title in 2015/16 season, De Boer moved on from Ajax.
From there, he was awarded the Inter Milan job where he would remain for only 3 months. With new Chinese owners and bags of money to be spent, De Boer seemed like a good fit to bring Inter Milan back into Europe and title contention. However, new signings didn't gel well together initially and following a poor start to the season, an impatient board pulled the trigger on De Boer’s sacking.
At Crystal Palace, the expectation should be much lower - and more realistic - and will suit De Boer more. Palace are a much more stable club than Inter Milan currently are as they hope to go a whole season with only one manager. De Boer should bring a stability to the club with long-term ambitions of Europe and short-term success of building on the previous managers’ work. After all, since gaining promotion in 2013, Palace have had 4 managers in 4 seasons before De Boer was appointed.
Historically, Palace have played with a more traditionally English style of play. However, under De Boer we could see Palace move to a more modern, continental way of playing. Last season, Antonio Conte ushered in the new era of 3-at-the-back in England. Over the course of the season more and more clubs used the 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 system, from the range of Arsenal and Everton to even Watford and Hull City.
While it could take time for the players to adapt to this new system, it will be interesting to see how they do once they have adapted to it. It could prove to be the catalyst to a successful campaign for Palace that could see them challenging for European places come the end of the season.
De Boer has gone back to his old hunting ground Ajax to help his cause, signing young defender Jairo Riedewald for a reported £8 million. Palace have also brought in midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan from Chelsea. Though these signings may not be enough to last out a gruelling campaign in the top half, there is still plenty of time for further reinforcements to be added to the squad. However, if these are to be the only signings, they are still encouraging. Riedewald should be a good addition to a much older Palace defence while Loftus-Cheek was one of the most prized players in Chelsea’s fabled academy and will be able to grow under De Boer if given enough playing time.
With all that positivity, though, rumours have suggested that Palace may be about to lose their two key players. Both Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke have been linked with moves away from Selhurst Park. Zaha has been a long-rumoured target of Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and Benteke has been a surprise target for current champions Chelsea as they look to add depth to their squad ahead of what could be a long European campaign. No concrete offers appear to have been made but with a month to go in the Summer window, anything could happen yet.
Crystal Palace fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the season ahead. De Boer should prove himself as a smart coach and will likely elevate this Palace team to new heights. While European qualification may be too ambitious for now, the future is bright for the Eagles.
Predicted finish: 8th
