Digging back in my CD collection I rediscovered this gem from 1996 by saxophonist James Carter. This recording teamed Carter (who plays a multitude of different saxophones as well as bass clarinet) teaming up with, you guessed it, some of the elder statesmen of jazz for nine romps through some classic jazz tunes. Thus we get to hear Carter play “Freereggaehibop” with Lester Bowie, “Parker’s Mood” with Larry Smith, “Lester Leaps In” with Harry “Sweets” Edison, “Namia” with Hamiet Bluiett, “Blue Creek” with Buddy Tate, “Centerpiece” with Edison, “Composition #400” with Bluiett, “Moten Swing” with Tate, and “Atitled Valse” with Bowie. Carters working group at the time was Craig Taborn, Jarbu Shahid, and Tani Tabbal, and these guys, including the elders, swing. Everyone was on during these sessions. Seven of the titles were recorded direct to two track, and you can certainly hear the liveness of those cuts. The disc was mastered by Ted Jensen. So the sound is excellent.
