Domestic | Future

"Domestic" was probably the best word to describe what he and Frankie had, despite how much both of them hated it. They were so far into whatever mess of a relationship they'd fallen into that he really couldn't help but embrace it. They moved through the world together, sharing their apartment without much of an argument. These days, they didn't even have to talk. He knew how she liked her coffee in the mornings, she knew when he was flexing his fingers a lot that it meant he needed a distraction from whatever piece he was working on, both of which could easily lead to sex.

They'd moved here right after high school. Mel and Casey shared an apartment, Mel going to college and Casey working in some theater. Chicago had a lot of those. Burke and Frankie tagged along, neither of them completely able to accept that they weren't exactly needed. Which meant they ended up together. With Leighton, of course, in tow. 

His parents were flying into town tomorrow to visit. He hadn't seen them in a few years, and they certainly hadn't seen him here in Chicago. It was always more of a visit on his end, traveling to whatever place they were living in now. Burke always found an excuse, claimed he was traveling for a show or something, just so he didn't have to bring them here.

It'd been five years. Five years that he'd lived here in Chicago, sharing an apartment with Frankie, and he somehow hadn't even told them yet. Burke's phone buzzed and he pulled it out, holding it to his ear. "Hey mom, how was your flight across the ocean? Good, good. Yeah, listen, about the sleeping situations... No, I know you planned on staying at my place, but listen, mom," Burke sighed, shaking his head and pausing, leaning his back against the front door of the apartment he shared with Frankie. "Mom, I know you're not going to like this, but I can't have you stay with me. Because, listen, I live with Frankie. I know, that's sinful or whatever. Mom, listen, we're together and it makes sense and I don't really care if God frowns on it. You and dad enjoy New York, okay? I'll pick you up at O'Hare tomorrow. Four thirty, right? Perfect, see you then. And mom listen, I'll pay for your hotel. I promise, it'll be way nicer, anyway. Yeah, Fran's coming. She says hi, she's excited to see you, too. I love you."

The conversation went just as badly as he expected, his mother immediately rushing into the religious scolding he'd expected. But Burke didn't care. Turning the handle and stepping inside the apartment, he grinned to himself. The red hair was standing at the island, mumbling to herself about the pile of cookies that had accumulated there. "I swear, Mel finds more time to bake now that she's in school than she ever did before," he teased, pressing a lingering kiss to Frankie's neck. "How was your day, Frank?"
