Jamsteady and it's relevance in Kolkata's Indie Music Scene

I understand that corporate events require the bands to play done to death numbers which is exactly why we need to support new music and ideas even more. The cliched sight of a struggling musician is not a happy one. This is all the more reason to adopt the cherished DIY ( Do It Yourself ) approach. We need to join hands and nourish the scene. After all its music for the kids and by the kids. And JAMSTEADY is a great step in that direction. On 26th of April the city experienced its first indie music night at The Princeton Club. The night saw four city bands. The event was aptly called Kick Up the Jams. Freshword were first up with their singer/songwriter sensibilities. With chill/ acoustic songs like Murgi and Talk is Cheap the duo strummed up a storm. Next up were the acoustic duo Ifs and Buts. Nicholas and Shubhodeep write Indie/ Pop songs. Inspired by the likes of Death cab for Cutie their lyrics are sometimes humor laden and sometimes serious. They have been around for sometime now and have also released a self titled EP. Some of their songs appear to be sung by bards speaking of love and loss. The third act of the night were Jeepers Creepers. This post punk band channeled their angst with songs like Rubik's Cube and Taxi Ride. Formed in 2011 they have performed in all the major metropolitan cities. The last band to step up was Write In Stereo and boy did they get the crowd moving. Their distinct Pop/Indie sound also has major Dance music influences. Inspired by their musical heroes like Foals and Daft Punk they want their audience to groove. With novel tones, dancey patterns and jumpy beats directed towards us we did just that. I would also like to highlight a band called Tint which played at the same venue on 3rd May. This Post hardcore quartet takes inspiration from bands like Saosin,The Mars Volta, Under Oath,Toe and At the drive in. They use melodic vocals, ambient guitars and complicated drumming in their songs. With songs like Said and Done, Timekeeper and Gently Violent they already have a couple of high quality gigs at major venues across the country under their belt. They are one act to watch out for. Special thanks to Nishit Arora and Sammy who were the organizers of this event. I hope fresh music continues to capture the imagination of young musicians. Thanks!

The Jamsteady gigs that go down at Princeton have some interesting artists playing mainly original music to what has become a dedicated audience.

Here are 5 simple reasons (in no particular order) you should drop all your other Friday plans and find your way to Princeton Club-

The booze is cheap. Actually, you can scratch that. A 60ml shot of rum is 100 bucks. That’s not cheap, that is perfectly priced. Here’s the math, if you buy 5 shots (500 INR for the mathematically-challenged), you’re bound to end up very happy by the end of the night. Trust us, we know.

The crowd is lovely. This point is actually in direct relation to the aforementioned one. Once everyone’s had a shot too many, ear-to-ear smiles are the order of the night. It’s like a Happydent commercial under dim lights. Very cute. But seriously, everyone’s just out to have a good time.

Things like this happen. ‘Nuff said.

It’s recently gone indie. So what if the sponsor’s gone for a walk. Jamsteady is still going strong. There’s a small little box labeled ‘Band fund’ or something along those lines. Donate generously. We do…sometimes.

…and the music. Oh yes. Live music happens here. Very good music. Pop music, rock music, electronic music, all kinds of music.
