they say to keep your friends close and your enemies closer. that's why wednesday held on to the flower her executioner gifted her. it was the only palpable memory of what happened that will never fade. wednesday suddenly jumps out of bed and walks towards her book collection, from where she picks the damned book with a swift motion. she returns to the bed, opening it and swiping through the pages, until the reminder is noticed.
❝ look, ❞ she utters, holding on both sides of the book, revealing the black dahlia. wednesday's not usually the sentimentalist type, but alas, when someone tries to murder her and fails, something's ought to be kept in the memory of what could've been. index finger points at the wilted flower, ❝ this is the flower laurel gates gave me the first night i came here. i keep it as a reminder that everything passes, moments, people, memories. this flower will cease to exist eventually, but it serves as a reminder that i am here. i can see it, touch it, feel it. but even when it decays to dust, something will remain embedded into the book. the smell, the traces the flower left behind before its ultimate demise. ❞ suddenly the book is shut close, wednesday's dark gaze back onto janessa's countenence.
❝ just because something or someone is gone, doesn't mean they don't leave traces, memories. ❞ she learned that the hard way through visceral visions and through seances only her and morticia know of. nothing is truly gone, not even the spirit. ❝ but until they seemingly vanish, they're here. ❞ in other words, they are both there, in the room, talking about the ephemeral state of everything. they're alive and sitting on a bed. why worry about the future when the present is calm? the morning after they shall resume to the chaos out there in jericho. for now, they're safe and talking and making memories. the only thing that cannot be destroyed, for it leaves traces in their timeline.
