DAY 1
Everyone arrived at 20 Jay Street on time from their SVA housing and got to meet Iman Bowie: The Hugging Pit Bull of Brooklyn Heights. Co-Director of the New York Studio Program, Al Lupiani gave everyone a tour of the gorgeous facilities and we all selected studios without any bickering! 17 students, Paul Jeanes (MICA Faculty Assistant), Janet Olney (Graduate Assistant) and long time program coordinator Thyrza Nichols Goodeve: love fest group. After doughy, greasy pizza we took off on foot through DUMBO which is changing faster than a gentrified giraffe. Everyone was introduced to Yuval who runs the great P.S. 1 second hand bookstore on Front and Washington Street. We then dropped Iman Bowie off at her Brooklyn Heights residence on Henry Street where she lives with Baby the 19 year cat and Bumblina the Devil Cat who is 6 months old. And then we walked over the never-ceases-to-amaze Brooklyn Bridge dodging tourists and bikes. On the NYC side 2 of us were picked out of the crowd to participate in the break dancing gymnastic totally wild boogie box routine that 5 guys put on daily. Such showman. Lots of hooting and clapping and tourists from Australia, Chile, Germany and Nicaragua who gave them generous 10$ and 20$ bills. We were all too poor but gave what we could. Then down to Ground Zero where some prehistoric beast seems to be growing. It looks like an upside down armadillo. And then we walked through Zuccotti Park which is utterly unrecognizable as Occupy Wallstreet Headquarters. They need to put up photos.Paul took some people to buy art supplies, others went back to the dorms, and Thyrza puffed her way over the BB on a Citibike.
